Using the hook and loop looks like a perfectly functional and non-destructive application on this rear cover but wouldn't the bulk be bothersome on a pickguard? Your initial magnet idea was a good one. Dingwall uses a magnetic cover over their battery compartments that work beautifully.

I'm not sure, but it doesn't really bother me on the back, so I shouldn't think that it would bother me on the front. Afterall, it's very thin.
