Jack's a big a-hole - I've never met such a prick.

I was in the Dallas area and he invited me into his home. He regaled me with stories of Mississippi, Houston, and the Navy. He fed me strange liquor concoctions. We hung out in his music room and played basses together - and he didn't even laugh at my playing. I even left with parting gifts and prizes of the CowPilot sort. Then and now he answers all my questions with good cheer.

What a jag...

Lies, nothing but horrible lies!

Parting gifts? Just tell me it wasn't some type of undergarment, Jim.

Quick clip from Wikipedia for my friend Koogie:

"Chuck Rainey, born Charles Walter Rainey III in Cleveland, Ohio, is a famous professional bass player. He is best known for playing with Steely Dan but has performed with other major artists since 1962."

.."he recorded or performed with legends like Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin and The Supremes, among others. As a member of The King Curtis All-Stars, he toured with the Beatles on their second run across the U.S."

Mr. Rainey

Hears a question Jaques,

Does Chuck know he's Chuck? If you know what I mean. It seems there is no pretense there, but does he 'get' his level of influence.

My guess? No. He's probably humble, thinks any idol worship is silly. Probably something to the effect of 'It's my job and I do the best that I can.'

Or, perhaps, he's an a-wipe like Jack Williams.

Hmm, does he know he's who he is?

I think I get what you're saying. To me, there are only so many members of Bass Royalty, is that what you mean?

Jamerson, McCartney, Pastorius, Stanley, Levin, Rainey? Like that? I'm not really sure. I think he is aware, but not overly impressed with himself.

I'll have to ask him about that. "So, do you know that most of us think you're one of the patron saints of modern bass?"

I bet he laughs at me, though.

Exactly - and I bet he laughs at you too.

Shouldn't I be working???
