I thought I'd start a new thread here if that's alright. Continuing from my previous thread, my dear wife knows I want a Morse. Initially, I wanted an original model. She sends me an e-mail that says, "I like this one..."

Ernie Ball Music Man Steve Morse Y2D PURPLE SUNSET Used - (eBay item 120157248505 end time Sep-11-07 12:12:58 PDT)

While I do like the Y2d's, I'm not as familiar with them as I am the original model (which isn't that much either). I followed the reasons that Steve came up with the new model. They do make a lot of sense. It seems like a natural evolution from 20 years of playing...

Personally, I would go with a Y2D... the switches and pickup configurations on the original Morse looks rather complicated to me.

the primary thing the standard morse guitar has that the y2d doesn't is the slanted single coil .....& the guitar overall is a bit warmer tone .

the y2d has an absolute killer paint job , & the maple cap does add some briteness.

well i learnt how to use all the switches the day i got it....lol

Yeah, I am sure it wouldn't be that hard to learn.... but recalling all that while you are playing live while concentrating on what your playing and trying to remember the lyrics of the song you are trying to sing..... I am sure I would louse something up. :D

They're both awesome guitars, and largely interchangeable IMHO. As Tommy says, the lack of the single is the biggest difference. The newer Morses have the same neck profile as the Y2Ds, which is the perfect neck (for me, anyway).

But yeah, they're pretty similar. It's a good chunk of change, so if you want one I'd get the one that's most appealing to you. You won't be disappointed either way ;)

I did go for the "old" one because of the second single coil and didn´t regret.
Y2D has the beauty on her side ;)

I found that I had to alter my picking style to avoid bumping the slanted single coil- but got used to it in relatively short order- although I do find that the y2d is more comfortable for me.

Would you mind saying a little more about that?

Butch- I probably should have said "MY y2d is more comfortable than MY Morse..." I just sat down a few minutes with each one and I think the reason is that the action has come up a little on my morse, so my y2d just feels a little better because the action is slightly lower- there really is no difference in comfort level in terms of how the guitar balances or anything like that.

I presume you've seen these videos:

Well, I have a Y2d coming this Monday (b-day present from the wife). She liked the looks of the Y2d better than the original; hence my thread.

We shall see how it fares. I'm pretty excited....
