With standard 9-42 JP6 gives very much bass. Actually too much bass for such thin strings, I think :). It has same body thickness and width with JP7 and JP Baritone, same pickups and electronics (due to products specs), so I got the idea to drop it down to A.
What strings are needed for comfort playing in this tuning with often usage of bends (scale is 25.5)? Is it 13-59?
Thank you.

Petrucci discusses strings. He does not mention the bass issue that you are having though.

DON'T DO IT!!!! I almost did that with my Pet. The strings are too thick for the nut. You will destroy it!

the24thfret, k.gormley: thank you, I'm glad that my guesses were close to reality.

edrod: cool video, he drops to C with 12-56 and says they're rather tight to compare with 9-42 - am I right with my English? - so 13-59 would be fine for drop-A# or drop-A .... And maybe even thicker they should be..

eegor: it's A, not E...

Still, the string was way too big for the nut, at least for me.

eegor: this is the problem. But not a big one. Thread-file rules. Anyway 9-42 are too thin for me.
JohnnyD19, edrod: I was mistaken with meaning of word "dropped" - it is used to say about 1 string only, is it? I understood Petrucci's words as "all strings are tuned down 2 steps", i.e. "do fa si-bemol mi-bemol sol do" instead of classic "mi la re sol si mi".

Oui, tu as parfaitement bien compris. Cependant, je ne crois pas que personne d'autre qu'un francophone n'aurait pu te donner raison sur ce point :p :D

Finally, I did it. But had a lot of doubts between "A-E-C-G-D-A" and "H-F#-D-A-E-H". Analysed again all songs that I play and chosen the second one because I need the open E in bass. Bought 13-56 Ernie Ball 2204.
There was almost no problem with nut. Only the notch for 5th string (originally tuned A) was too narrow. But it needed no thread-file. I just moved the new string there and back again several times as if it was a file itself - and it fit perfectly into the slot!
Then required some movements of truss-rod and it's ok.

Wow. I hope your distortion, whatever you use, befits the new "lower than hell" tuning.

The24thfret: I like the new clean sound even more than distorted.

agreed. H isn't even in the musical alphabet.

Taken from Wiki:

In most countries using this system, the letter H is used to represent what is B natural in English, the letter B represents the B♭, and Heses represents the B♭♭ (not Bes, which would also have fit into the system). Belgium and the Netherlands use the same suffixes, but applied throughout to the notes A to G, so that B♭ is Bes. Denmark also uses h, but uses bes instead of heses for B♭♭.

That thing must sound good. Do you have the D-Sonic pickup? You should consider turning it around if you do (screws to neck and bar to bridge). Wouldn't it have been easier to get a JP BFR Baritone or just drop a 7 string one whole step?

I dropped my Sub1 to C and it sounds killer! The string was too wide for the nut and the nut broke. I was careful, but it just didn't like that massive string (12s). It's has sinc ebeen repaired and works great and sounds killer with 11s.... down to A? OMG
