Hypothetically speaking, if you guys had to choose between a DD2 BFR JP or a Koa BFR JP what would you pick and why?

There are so many pros and cons each way, i can't decide which way I'd rather go. Maybe someone else has some fresh input that will blow this whole thing wide open.

Koa, because it's the only thing nicer than the DD2.
No, but seriously, I'd buy the Koa, because it's basically my dream JP. Nice and mahogany-y :)

Dargie 2, because they're limited and I think the Koas are in standard production, but I could be wrong.

I'd lean towards the Dargie, but Koa is currently on the endangered species register due to concerns about the habitat it provides for endangered native Hawaiian wildlife. So the opportunity to own a Koa instrument may be non existent within the next 10 years.

Obviously both are going to be top notch, amazing instruments, and you're going get some of that Mahogany sound from the tone block in the Dargie BFR, and both have the ebony fretboards so I'd say go make your decision based on aesthetics. If you like the look of Koa and gold hardware more than color shifting Caramel Apple and chrome hardware go Koa, if not get the Dargie.

That's one of the main things making me consider the DD2- exclusivity. But on the other hand if I found these two guitars in a shop and had no previous knowledge of them, I'd probably choose the Koa, so I'm not sure if that means getting the DD2 would be kind of a jerk move, just buying it for the rarity. On the other hand, I don't particularly care for the JP shields and the DD2 inlays are cool and space alieny.

Then there's also the pickups to consider, since the Koa I could maybe get second hand or in stock somewhere from before the pickup change (with the D Sonic and Air Norton) but the DD2 would have the new ones for sure. I don't know which column to put this as a plus for, since I haven't used the new pickups and could end up liking the old ones better for all I know.

They both have the ebony board, which is something I've wanted in a JP forever (well, okay, maple is the ideal, but ebony is a close second).

Maybe it's just me, but I'd get the Koa for sure. I absolutely love the DDII finish though I wouldn't order a BFR JP in this finish either. If I wanted a BFR -be it maple top or Koa- I'd want the beautiful top to show.
So if I was undecided like you are I'd get a normal JP6 in DDII and then a Koa next...!

Exclusiveness in the end of the day shouldn't matter too much honestly. In the end it's an instrument you play. If DD2 wasn't limited the choice would be easy as pie .

I personally would never buy something over another just for exclusiveness.

WOAH WHHAT!!!!! :D thats ok because i may be turning to an AL HHH :) wait and see when the funds replenish....

but id go the dd2 as its limited... but then again the KOA is so beautiful!! i nearly ordered one, but here in Australia they are so expensive!! i nearly collapsed when i got the quote! oh man.... this IS tough! actually i change my mind get the KOA! :D

Like I said earlier, it has to be the Koa. Even despite Koa's being standard, and DD2's being limited, I think you'll see more DD2's around these forums than Koas. Even then Koa is only available on Luke and JP, where DD2 will be available and many more models.

And to be frank with you mate, there is no better finish that suits the gold hardware better than the Koa. That is truth.

Good luck with your decision SHane, I'm sure whatever choice you make will make ya happy but my two cents is with the Koa, for sure.

Not sure which way I'd go.

I'm not a fan of Gold hardware, so I'd probably choose the DD2.

AND

Get a DD2 Gold Roller for all my Mahogany needs ! :D ;)

That is a tough call. We'll, since I already have an original DD, I think I'd go with the Koa. But, the flip color of the Dargie and the Ebony board is very appealing. Not sure if it's worth having two Dargie, though.

Well, I think i'm going to get a JP. I got to play a BFR JP today for a bit and its much better than the standard JP I played at a shop a few years ago. I was impressed with the clean tones and the stinging full rock tone. Loved the mahogany neck. Now to just save up for one, I would DIE for a Koa JP.

I'm sure everyone here knows, but the JP, especially the BFR JP where Piezo is standard, is an incredibly versatile axe.

It sure is a shredder's axe, but it can also do so much more.
