I love the ceramic pick up in the sterling 5 and the humbucking in the 25th is equally killer

No prob BP. I can take it (and dish it out too). But I do understand your point. Don't get me wrong - I like writing for GW, but it's frustrating to have such a small word count, especially when it's a double review. And... especially when it's a double review of two significantly new instruments. It's tough. I did get them to let me break the video into two separate ones so I could at least spend the time needed with each bass individually. Guess now that it's on the newsstand, I can put them both up on Youtube for general viewing.

Apart from the inherent differences between a Ray and a Sterling, I don't see a big difference in just the B string, they are both great examples of what can be done at 34" scale.

ed I repeat I dont know what you are talking about I was referring to the constant threads here where people state that ceramic is inferior...

Ah, it all becomes clear now, zen master. I, too, was confused (and this was sober).

The timeless wisdom of the internetz! Ceramic is inferior! Basswood is crappy for tone! Stingrays are one-trick ponies! Thunderbirds neck-dive!

Wait, that last one was true.

Will you build me a single H bongo 5 with a ceramic pickup BP? :D

Then I could have all the inferior stuff to make music with that sounds good. :D

If you would paint that crappy basswood white I would appreciate that too. :D

Ah, I wuz confused too.

Well.... anyway... I don't know where people get these crazy ideas. Probably from reading too many magazines!

I get a lot of questions from Youtube - "what's better, an XYZ or a ZYX?" "What kind of bass should I get?" (my favorite), or "What bass is best for - metal, rock, jazz, funk, blues, slap, tapping, pickstyle, etc...."

I try VERY hard not to jump on these people's case (as tempting as it is). I just tell them to go to a store and play a bunch of basses and buy something that they like. It's like no one wants to do ANY work on their own, even when the work is the most fun thing in the world - checking out basses. They want to ask the "expert" be told what to buy, and then be happy with it even though they had no role in the decision. Crazy I tell ya.

I will reiterate that this new Sterling 5 is one badass mofo! To steal a phrase from a fast-food mega-merchant.... I'm Lovin' It!

We see many of those kinds of questions here too, concerning EBMM basses/pickup configs, etc ... "stingray or sterling?", "H, HH or HS?" (and now SSS and HSS, of course) ... "maple or rosewood?". Sometimes it's in the form of a poll, just to see who's got what, and that's fun and a different thing from "tell me what to buy". And I don't want to be critical when I see those posts, but I have the same kind of response to them that Ed describes here. It's actually kinda baffling, because I can't personally imagine asking someone ELSE what I should like or buy. It's true too, though, that sometimes finding a particular bass/pickup config in stock somewhere to try out isn't easy. For example, I eventually had to just buy my single H Bongo "on faith", based on my experimentation & experience with almost every other EBMM species, and largely on what I gleaned from my fellow Bongoloids about the BP Bongo's specific character, without ever having laid hands on one. But with many of the questions, you can tell it's a different thing ... often it seems people haven't lifted a finger to try the first thing themselves. Like Ed said, they just wanna skip the experimentation (a big part of the fun), and be told what's "best".

i bought my bongo on "faith" too...(this forum was an important part of the decision) it's imposible to find one in a store here in Chile, currently tho we have a few Sterlings by Musicman, a Stingray and a four strings 25th... and i've test them all :)

Just for the record i couldn't be happier with my bass now.... :D
