What does "NOS" mean?

The 2004 Trans-Red Axis SuperSport that I have, while it is still "new," I would not sell it as "NOS" because it has been played a few times by customers, and the original box is long gone. It's new, and in virtually perfect condition but it has been handled.

And yet by industry accepted definition, it still is NOS! And I daresay most retailers would certainly advertise/sell that piece as NOS. You could too Pete, but it says a lot about your integrity as a business owner that you choose not to.

I've always thought of NOS as new stock that had not been displayed and was a previously available model. To me, NOS would be not just new, from a dealer, but was also no longer available, and was never on display. Display pieces, to me, are the equivalent of used, with some exceptions of course.

In almost every other section of retail, a display, or demo item is discounted, or can be haggled to a decent discount. With instruments though, it never seems to be that way, except if there's any damage.

This illustrates my point exactly, gentlemen. Consumers should not get hung-up on the dealer-term NOS. There are personally-owned instruments that are considered "used" that are in newer and better condition.

Stock - i.e. stuff hanging on the wall
Stuff to order
Ex-Demo
Second hand
Tat we couldn't give away
and that old strat that used to wedge the door open....

I think since guitars have become an investment - folks are trying to cash in, fair enough, but a distortion of the truth, unless you keep it in facrory conditions!

Nice thread resurrection. Here's my opinion:

NOS = New, Old Stock

This means, the product is NEW, but it's been in stock a long time so it's OLD STOCK. If the product has been sold it is no longer NEW. It is USED. It also is no longer in stock. Therefore something sold cannot be NOS.

So if someone lists a product on eBay as NOS, but they are not a dealer then it is NOT NOS. It is used and they are misrepresenting the product.

Like New, Mint Condition, etc. would be references to condition. NOS has nothing to do with condition.

I do agree that there are some NOS items which are in poor condition. They're still *techincally* NOS, but should probably be sold at a Scratch & Dent or "BLEM" discount.
