Im a diehard "Japanese" Takamine fan ....i have played them live for 20 years ...But remember i said the JAPANESE Takamine's, not the korean or chinese......Big difference ..Tak's are made for the live environment ...they were there before anyone and are still on stages everywhere you look ...i would say Taylor and Takamine are the 2 biggies for the pros ....I found the people at the collings booth at NAMM very very rude to both me and my DAD who OWNS the store!!! .....So i wouldn't recommend them to my enemy....even though i know BP loves them(sorry BP) .....just sooooo damn rude ....i wouldn't give them a nickel!.......

Depends on your tastes and preferences.

Personally, I like Ovation but understand that most people either love or hate them. Sounds unbelievable plugged in. The Balladeers are the low end of the product line and built in the US (solid top). The offshore stuff is essentially a plywood top and the quality is hit and miss. Used ones can be had cheaply.

Art & Lutherie or Seagull are what I consider to be the best value for the buck out there for wooden boxes. Made under Robert Godin up in Canada.

Last time I had to play an acoustic live......I hit "acoustic" on my RP250 and played my modified sub. :D

I have a Taylor 814ce. I bought it because it was a good mix of acoustic sound quality and live sound quality. I tried Larrivees, Martins, Guilds, and Rainsongs when I was searching. I found the Taylor expression system as being the best solution for plugged-in applications.

If I was buying an acoustic with no need to plug into a PA or amp, I may have gone with a Larrivee. I was really impressed with the build quality, sound, and price of the Larrivees.

I've got a Larrivee Ovangkol D3 - great sounding guitar.
Smaller company, family run, made in the US (The 3 series is still made in Canada where they started) Lesser known but well crafted and great value for the money. (sound familiar ;))

They also have a good forum, friendly, knowledgeable, with a lot of good info. You think the electric guys are picky about their tone woods and pick-ups, go read a bit about tone woods, body shapes, string spacing, etc on an acoustic forum:eek:

My other recommendation for a good value is the Seagull. I had their base S6 model for 12 or so years before the Larrivee

I have a hand built all solid grand concert built by a local luthier. Brazilian Mahogany (vey old pieces of wood- had been in storage for years and years) back sides and neck and Cedar top. Plus Rio rosewood bridge and fingerboard. It was really cheap (ish) @ £800 considering the timber and the hoice of options. You couldn't get something like that from the big manufacturers.

However...

I also use a cheapo Martin- solid top- laminate back sides- nothing special. But what is special is the highlander pickup that I had fitted. It's like a piezo but its coaxial. Worth checking out. This is by far my favorite acoustic. Just goes to show it's not always the fanciest gear that is best! The beauty of this is that I can knock it about and I don't have to worry about it breaking.

When is EBMM going to produce an acoustic? :)

+1

One of my students has one of the cheaper Seagull models. It's an awsome guitar for the money- and it played well straight out of the box.

I really like the special Taylor sound, which has every Taylor from the cheapest to the expensive ones. I got new a Taylor 214CE, perfect acoustic plugged and unplugged. It was my deal in the class between 800 and 1200 Euros, and I compared it to a lot of other acoustics like Martin, Takamine, Breedlove, Seagull, Boulder Creek, Walden, Yamaha...

Hey brownpants, what model Martin is it? Is it a DX1? I play a DX1 every day, have it hanging in the living room, and noodle on it as often as I can. I love it. I call it my trailer trash guitar because of the countertop type laminate back and sides. They should have made it in Avacado, Harvest Gold or Almond. I compared it to D16's on up to D45's and it holds it's own. Sounds great. I'd like to someday install a pup like yours has. Mine also has the Micarta fretboard and bridge, looks like ebony, but nope! it's plastic. Wears like iron and looks and feels like black ebony. Also has the one piece mahog neck, and is made in USA, not Mex. Weird. The Martin DX1 is really a super value for a super good playing and sounding acoustic dreadnought.

It's not a Maton though, and I wish I could get a reasonably priced Maton here.
