Picky!

What kind of pics do people prefer to use? There's such a huge variety available it would be nice to get kind of a cross section of what people use! I'm a Jazz III red or black myself!

Jazz III's - just moved to them after 5 years of EBMM mediums - - not sure if i'll stick with the Jazz III's though - I have huge hands!

I used the black Jazz III's for years, but they tend to wear out very quickly, so I switched to the yellow Ultex Jazz III's which are great, BUT then protochicken on the boards gave me a Red Bear pick, which is similar in size to the Jazz III, but it's made of a sythetic tortoise shell that can't be destoyed by conventional weapons. They are solid.
You have to be careful though, they cost $20 a piece, so if your prone to losing picks, stay away. But, I highly recommend them.

I'll use whatever is within reach. These days most of what I find lying around the house seems to be .88 mm. What is that in inches for the US folks?

Fingers most of the time, but sometimes those green dunlop things. I wanted to try some of the smaller ones (I think the style that Luke uses) but I keep forgetting to get any!

i use 1.14mm dunlops. no particular reason ill play anything as long as its that thickness. though i am gonna gt some 2mm ones for some practise on the speedier side of things see if theres any improvement. where can u get jazz 3's in the uk batyak. iv never been able to trace any. ?

I play the Dunlop Jazz III's.

I have a particular order though:

1. Primary pick, performance pick: I ALWAYS use the Eric Johnson Jazz 3's. Believe it or not, but not all Dunlop Jazz III's are made of the same material. These have a different material and the texture has better grip than the new standard Jazz III's. Has the shape for speed, the thickness delivers a nice warm punch, and the particular material these Jazz III's are made of provide the least amount of pick noise of any pick I have ever used in my life. Some like the percussive noise of the pick striking the string, but I personally don't like. The elimination of this noise is very important to me. Unfortunately, also the most expensive and hard to find. -_-

2. Standard New Jazz III's - For practice. My beater pick. Different material then the EJ Jazz III's so the pick noise comes through more and it also has a little less grip.

3. Black (tortex) Jazz III's - Only when my ginormous paws feel like sweating more than they should. Also I use these for strumming too. I know, crazy, strumming with a Jazz III.

I do find the Paul Gilbert's sig. picks the most dynamic due to the size (just a bit bigger and wider than dunlop ultex jazz III), thickness and the sharp edge.

There's a shop in Truro called City Music where they usually sell them Page Title You may have to email them, but to be honest I wouldn't buy anythng other than picks there! You can always find them on ebay

+1. Ultex is awesome. The big 1.0 Dunlop Ultex's are also good.

The Red Bear Pick that Lefty is talking about is the Lil' Jazzer Heavy Gauge (with the optional speed bevel, left handed in our case). As he said they are $20 a pick and take 2-3 weeks to be made so you can't lose them and they won't survive being put in the washer and dryer, but they do not wear down and have amazing tone and feel.

You may feel like a tool for spending $20 on a pick at first, but I have been using the same pick for 6 months, I would have spent more than double that amount on replacing Jazz III Ultex's in that period.

I used Jazz IIIs for years. Now I use these "cool" picks that Pete DuBaldo got me hooked on.

These days, I am using custom made 1mm black Tortex Jim Dunlop picks, that say 'Tim O'Sullivan' on them.

Just received my order of 1200!

That should last me until at least the summer!
