Was wondering if silos could be ordered from the factory without that thick poly finish on them?...i have a friend who is skilled at applying the original nitro finish like Fender uses.
Tone wise i think no finish or Nitro make a huge difference in tone and would like natural from factory if posible..the other question that i have is there a BFR silo with the toneblock wood other than a 20th anniversarry or would the BFR Luke be the closest model if a guy wanted the tone block feature.

Hope someone can answer this for me as i am wanting to order a silo or luke in the next few days.

P.S i love my BFR Albert's and am a converted Fender man:D

My guess is you're not going to get an unfinished guitar, but I don't make the rules so I can't really answer.

AFAIK, the only BFR Silo's are the Doubleneck and the Gold Roller. The Doubleneck doesn't have tone blocks, and the Gold Roller has an all mahogany body, so a mahogany tone block would kinda be pointless :D

Thanks for the reply i wonder if they would do a special request? :)

My guess is a no go on the special order. As far as applying a nitro finish your best bet is to get a used one and strip it and refinish it.

The finishes on Music Mans are anything but thick.

Also, don't believe everything you read on finishes.

silos are insane-
i played and collected 13 strattys over the last 20 years that covered every spectrum you could think of as far as finish goes. I got my hands on a 20th about 2 months ago- as soon as i played the thing it was a whole new level of guitar: feel, tone, balance and i wanted another immediately. So i sold off all of my strattys that i knew i'd never play again which happened to be all of them.
I know that with Nito it allows the wood to breath and bring out the characteristics of the tonewood... but trust me you will not be disappointed at all with any aspect of the Silo or any EBMM for that matter. They are absolutely incredible (not that the strattys aren't) but there's no need to refin an incredible guitar.

but it's just my two cents worth :)

They don't make "unfinished" guitars at all and won't take special orders (understandably). But... if you're lucky you can find one like me: :D:D:D

Agreed on that - the OP should google the term "fullerplast".

+1 nitro finishes are not better than today's modern finishes. the nitro that is now available is nothing like the stuff used in the 50s and 60s. No advantage to using a finish that will crack and take forever to cure/harden. I've seen many a modern guitar finished in today's "nitro" and seen the dreaded soft finish, that you can press in with your fingernail.

modern finishes are more durable and look better longer.

The finish is so thin on all 3 of my Balls, that you can see the wood grain when you catch it in the light. If finish did make a difference to tone, I really don't think its an issue on MM guitars.

Its like the old direct mount vs scratchplate mount for pickups argument- very subjective with no real evidence (anecdotal 'evidence' doesn't count IMO!) to back up either sides point of view.

If you really have to have a nitro finish, you will need to strip the finish and start over. I'm sure it will be a fun project- but you will have to post pictures on the forum to let us know how you get on! Its the law :D

I really don't want an unfinished guitar but I would like a natural ash SiLO.

I've never heard of Fullerplast. Then again, I don't agonize too much over micro-details of a guitar so it wouldn't bother me either way.

Jim - that link has a little bit of that conspiracy-theory-manifesto-rant vibe. I take information from such places with a big block of salt.

Most people think that Fullerplast is applied by a single worker. However there is a growing theory about the possibility of a second shooter with a spray gun in an undisclosed location. It's all tied into the angle at which the product "hits" the body and the overspray shoots off the surface. ;)

Do you think there may be some secret micro film of this "2nd Sprayer" stashed in the hollow leg in a tiny church pew somewhere in Iowa?.... you may be on to something...

That is HOT!!!!!

My Silo is just a tad over a year old. Its already wearing away slightly where it rests on my leg. And my other guitar is a 2006 Fender American Deluxe vintage Sunburst and it looks as if it was made last week still. That thing will take FOREVER to age! As for my EBMM Silo I guess some chemical in my jeans deteriorates guitar finishes? (I made a thread about it a month ago or so). Does it bother me? Not a bit. :D
