I haven't seen BPs blog yet, but I must say that I LOVE watching old concert footage or videos from the 70s and 80s, etc....

With pro shot footage, it is a goldmine of yesteryear, no doubt.

I love watching odd interviews you never knew existed, usually from other countries when the artist was on tour; great stuff.

Amateur footage? Not for me!

I love live recordings, so I don't mind youtube. I can understand why an artist might be intimidated by it. It is just a sign of the times and unfortunately, it ain't going anywhere. My iPhone has a video camera, so that will be more and more common on phones with every passing year.

You're right BP, that's why I love the Dream Theater DVD releases. I'm a big fan and love how much they are committed to deliver the best quality and musicianship on stage. I've been to tons of gigs and quality bands like that and they keep amaze me.
So after a show, I'm not running to YouTube to see a vid, because the whole quality just won't live up to the real moment of seeing those musicians and fans having the time of their lives.
And filming a concert is futile, just enjoy and live the moment.

yeah, good blog. I think about this topic a lot, actually...

I myself have gone through the same thing with people's phone numbers -- I used to have tons of phone numbers memorized, and now I can barely remember my own sometimes...

I'm not that old (42), but even I remember a time long ago where some people like my grandparents still used the old word-letter prefix system for some phone numbers. For ex.: HUmboldt9-1234 translated to 489-1234 (the "H" and "U" corresponding to the 4 & 8...)

And I miss the old days of concerts with the flames of hundreds of lighters illuminating the thick, blue-smokey haze when the lights go down...nowadays it's the glow of hundreds of cell phones in a smoke-free atmosphere, with lots of people spending much of the time staring into the little screen on the phone and security/smoke nazis patrolling the aisles... (actually, the smoke-free part isn't so bad. But it added to the atmosphere and experience...heh...) and ugggh....crappy cell phone videos...

And texting during concerts...it's crazy how much that goes on as well...I just don't get it...I'm there to take in the show, not have a text chat...

BP, you should write this up for print and submit it to the NY Times or something, it's that good.

i was expecting a rant about people's inability to without their thoughts and their compulsive habit to share what spiteful crap comes to their fingertips first. I think the commenting system on youtube is a bigger issue.

You make some pretty good points there BP.

Delving further :

How has RedTube affected your spontaneous "performances" ?

Are you fully rehearsed, and do you only use your own rig ?? :D :D

I wish they would make a point of people not being allowed camera phones at concerts because I am tired of idiots telling me (not asking) me to get out the way so they can get a better view. Whereas I am like go f yourself I paid good money to enjoy myself not so you can make a crappy unfocused video with distorted clipped sound.

Its not just the performer it prevents from havin fun its the crowd. You think twice about havin fun and wondering if you're conversations with friend next to you are gonna end up on youtube.

Worst inventions ever, total invasion of privacy I think.

I am so glad I left school before these things surfaced.
It just takes bullying to a whole new level.

Agreed.

The humiliation of having stuff like that broadcast to the whole world (not just the school) must devastate the victims.

And it just encourages more when the posters / bullies compete with each other to see who gets the most hits.

BP, I'm totally with you on this....and there's a lot of true things our brothers added in here. So, not much to say for me anymore, except...

Since we evolved to self-conscious beings with some sort of intelligence, we humans try to get the most respect we can possibly get. We want to be "valued", as a brother said here. The sad thing is, that in a globalized world it seems like quality content doesn't matter, and numbers and figures are ruling....everyone's a winner (what a quote :D ) when having the most views, hits, posts, selling figures, whatever bull**!t the next best superstar comes up with. At least that's what the media tell us, and we "older" guys might not believe everything, but for a much younger generation that's the rule

That's why we (as humans) degenerate, and everything that is uncountable looses value....personality, soul, empathy, life. And once lost, no plastic surgery can bring it back  YouTube is just the mirror for this...

I agree with Mr Ball, memories are the priceless thing
At the risk of being an old fart (OK, I am one).....whilst I quite like being able to video myself & put the resulting mish-mash on YouTube for the amusement of friends.......I wonder if we are losing our appreciation for quality. 20 years ago music came on CDs from recording studios to be played on high quality sound systems. These days it's much more commonly captured via cellphone mic & played back via cheap headphones or computer speakers. Personally I think videos of anyone should only be posted online with the permission of the people in them.....though how you police this I have no idea

I didnt post any of the vids afterwars on youtube ad the quality was poor and i was too lazy to be honest.i think we should all leave our cameras at thome and just enjoy the experience!

Once again You Tube is a great resource. I did clinics in New York with Petrucci and got slammed. Just murdered. I can promise you that the person sitting at the computer taking his wrath out on me would not say anything even close to that to my face or anybody who cared for me face. I just take it. Its ok. I have said many times that people who cannot fathom the fact that I never ask to play with anybody and am probably the biggest critic of my abilities..but guess what.? The guys and I have fun playing. Its the essence of music..the ability to communicate and have a little fun with our instruments. I also consider the source....I would be happy to have a little playing duel on either bass or guitar with most of them. Wouldnt it be great to have a you tube button where you could select the person making the cruel comments and magically put them in the same situation? Naked. hehehehe ..then have the more viscous comments posted about them tatooed on their forehead. Ahhh one can dream

Aside from the comments everything is turning to vanilla....safe baby safe.

When we did the guitar center 25th tour they turned the ability to make comments off.
