Anyone tried flats on a stingray?

I currently play at church and I just joined a band that covers Motown and old stax songs. I refuse to use "that" bass so I thought about getting some EB flats for my Ray, and getting another Sr and use rounds for church gigs.anyone here use flats on their SR?

I use TI flats on mine. I like the soft feel, and they still have plenty of bite when I need it.

Do a search here, I'm sure there are lengthy threads on this. But the answer is a resounding "yes". Big Duck Dunn fan here. My SR4 is currently strung with EB Group II's for extra thumpy goodness. The Ampeg B-15 Fliptop model in my Line 6 X3Live through a poweramp with a treble little roll off on the SR gets real close. Fingerstyle near the fret board, and channel the Memphis groove!

I have my '07 Ray strung with stainless flats and it has suprisingly retained alot of bite. Yes a bit smoother, but I can't do the shimmery chorded thing with them, but man it sounds really good.

i dont think so.. what works for one person doesnt necessarily work for everybody else.

what im trying to say is get a set of flats and try for yourself. who knows, you might be surprised!
i sure was when i liked the bongo best with flats

I have a set of Group III's that I cycle in once in a while. I usually go back to rounds (Hybrid Slinkies) for the most part though. I find I loose some of the Stringray's character with flats.

So.. MrM... your sig unfortunately puts me in a pickle. What is one to do if they have a fretless Bongo?

Its currently wearing rounds, probably because I haven't found the right flats for it... that and they just kinda sound right on it. I'm thinking of trying a frankensteined set of Group II's with the standard (and only) EB Flatwound low-B (.130).... while we are on the topic, has anyone done this? Do group II's match up well with the .130 B... or should I just shut up and do the standard group III five string set?

Put a set of EB Group IIIs on my Stingray a couple of weeks ago after much hesitation.
All I'm thinking now is "why didn't i do it sooner ?"

Thanks for yet another Ed vid. I love Ed's take on stuff (and his playing!). I've had TI flats on my SR5 - and then off, and then on, and then off...

I like them, and then I want a change, and then I go back... and then forth? Again.

I'm schizophrenic about strings. You change strings and your instrument is now different. Its all preference, flats are great to me. For awhile.

My band plays a lot of Motown/Stax, and I find that the Stage II flats on my Ray work fine. They are surprisingly bright, but moe lively in the upper ranges (think "Knock On Wood"). By comparison, the ***der sounds muddy.

teh flats they are fantastic. really im at a point where putting rounds on my bass would "trying something new." even though ive had roundwounds before i feel like ive lost touch with round wounds at this point lol
