A guy I know told me he'll part with it for $200, and it's in mint condition. Is $200 about right for an obviously used axis bridge pickup or should I hold out and see if they're any cheaper elsewhere (e.g. ebay)?

Really? This one is all you. Supply and demand. How badly and how quickly do you want one? Only you have the answer for that.

I just saw a set of both axis pickups sell for $200 on ebay. Check there first.

Do you guys think the bridge pickup would sound nice in a jackson soloist pro (neck thru design/one-piece), with mohogany body and floyd system?

$170 and probably $30 for shipping still seems a bit excessive, even considering that the condition is mint.

Also, do pickups deteroriate at all over the years, as the one this guy is selling is about a decade old?

To me personally, it would only be worth $170 if the pickup came out of an EBMM EVH and you needed it for an EBMM EVH restoration project. The Axis pickups are hard to find so it's difficult to put an accurate price on them but, that's a lot of cash for a basically modified/custom Tone Zone pickup.

You're on an EBMM forum asking how a $200 Axis pickup would sound in a Jackson Import guitar? I think that you just lost everyone here...

You should post that question on this forum:

how close would the moded tone zone be to the axis pu? also is there an instructinoal on how to do this modification and does it require any special skill?

Wow, that was helpful.

incidentally, i see no better place to get an opinion on how these pickups would sound in a guitar, any guitar for that matter, as most, if not all of the guitarists in this forum have extensive experience with this particular pickup and it's not completely beyond the realm of disbelief that some would be familiar as to the tonal characteristics produced in other types of guitar bodies.

Hey Man, First and foremost welcome to the Ernie Ball Forum. You have to keep in mind that it is just that, all about Ernie Ball/Music Man products. Slav was just trying to point you in the right direction to better answer your question. Harmony Central is more for "gear heads" to talk about all brands while this is about, well EBMM.

That said, the Tone Zone is close in sound to the EVH/Axis pickup and would serve you well... and at half the price... No mods necessary. Then again, there are a lot of cool pickups out there and spending $170 for a single pickup is a lot for something that may not work like you are expecting. A better resource for matching pickups to your guitar would be Dimarzio.com... they have the experience to help direct you better then all of us on the EBMM forum.

My suggestion is to just try several pickups in your guitar until you find the sound you are looking for.

Stick around though, maybe an Axis is in order for you... they are addictive.

Now that was helpful, thank you Stratty.

I keep hearing that the tone zones are in fact quite different than the axis pickups. I plan on getting an axis in the not-so-distant future so i might just hold out till then.

They do sound slightly different... its been so long since I have played anything but my Axis/HH AL (and I'm not about to swap pickups in them) that I can't really describe the Tone Zone anymore. I do remember them producing similar tones but being a little more "nasel". But that could have been the application... a S***T is a totaly different beast.

This guy's selling the set - musicman evh axis dimarzio pickup set!!!!!! - eBay (item 110571952553 end time Aug-13-10 22:03:07 PDT) The BIN price is ricockulous but see if you can break the reserve.

Did he really cut out a picture of EVH??? now that is funny!!

Funny I was bidding on that one (http://cgi.ebay.com/musicman-evh-axis-dimarzio-pickup-set-/110571952553?pt=Guitar_Accessories), and the guy told me $175 for the bridge, shipping included. I still think that's too high so i countered with $140, but he declined despite asking me to make an counter-offer to his $175 stating that he wanted to see how the auction went and stressing how rare these pickups are and how he thinks he'll sell them in the $280 range - so far it isn't looking to good for him.

Funny thing is how does one know these aren't tone zones, or any other dimarzio pu for that matter

If I were you I would just go for some other Dimarzio pickup for your project. There are so many to choose from and you will end up spending less cash, even if you have to try a few different ones. It just makes more sense... let the EVH/Axis pickup work its magic in an Axis or HH AL

I agree with the board that $200 is to high for a single pup for a guitar that is still in production. I think you have been given good advice and led in the right direction that will save you a good amount of money while putting you on track to the sound you are seeking. You also cant be that sensitive to a joke as I found the Seinfeld post funny and harmless, just take it with a grain of salt. But as stated you are on a EBMM forum do you think someone is going to say it would not sound good in your Jackson, as everyone here are diehards for these guitars. If you went to the Gibson or Ibanez forum asking if a humbucker to one of there models would sound good you are going to get an- of course. That is why you were directed to Harmony Central which is a neutral site, as it is made up of players of all brands. I am guessing you heard an Axis and would like that sound in your guitar which I totally understand, but personally I would not buy a decade old pup for $200 as for another $50 if that, you should be getting a pair.If you are looking on the bay wait until you could do better, I mean even the guy selling the EVH pups which I believe will be worth it for someone who needs them, when you break it down is only selling each pup for $175. There are a good bunch of knowledgeable guys here and you should stick around, and when you can swing it just go get an Axis which just happens to be my favorite model.lol
