Thanks for the Eddie Trunk links. It'll be interesting to hear from the other guys to get another viewpoint, but those guys have always let MP be the one to do the majority of the press stuff. So, if we do hear from any of them in an interview, it'll also be interesting to see who does that interview.

Well, we'll see how it plays out. BP is probably right, and we should just watch it unfold.

I remember when I first the "One" album by Neal Morse and thought "whoa, MP is on FIRE on this album!" Based on interviews (and his performances), it seemed like MP was really fueled by the diversity of working with Neal on his solo albums. I would really like to see Mike and Neal join up on a more full-time basis, moreso than to see him play with a band like Avenged Sevenfold.

I'm with BP...everything will be alright.

I don't get all the BS out there in the virtual world. MP needed a break from DT, the other guys didn't. He thought like if he was doing something against his inner self, he would be demolishing the relationship with his bandmates in the long run. He didn't want to do that, he wanted to keep them as friends and brothers. So he left....that's a very grown up decision. Period.

Come on, mates, we've all been in bands and still are. We know what's going on here. BP is right...it's just a band. It's huge, but just a band, with all the inter-personal dynamics that come with it. And all those freakin' kids out there...wake up :p

That interview with Eddie Trunk explains it perfectly. I see Mike's point of view. Both parties hope he will play with DT again and he will, just give it time.

Been a long time since I visited this part of the Inter-web.. :(
Like everyone else I was deeply shocked with the news, but life goes on. :) MP neede a break, simple, everyone needs one at some stage. I'm all for him taking the time to refresh and re-ignite the flame. Also I'm full supportive of the decisions on both sides. I will follow them with whatever projects they do.
I'm sick of reading 'without MP it's not Dream Theater'.. I mean seriously?! The spirit of DT is in the music, not in one person. Sure it will be different, but thats how things evolve and grow. I think it will be a great time for DT to progress and evolve (I mean they are a progressive band aren't they?? ;) ).
BP is bang on the money, he has been around long enough to know whats what, and is quite a wise man. :)
The DT juggernaught will carry on with or without MP. And I'm excited to hear what the next couple of years bring. :D

exactly.

i can already envision the debates that will happen in the next 5 years.
DT will put out an album without MP and then he'll make a triumphant return make another record and the fans will start the "I liked DT's album without him vs. the they are better with MP" argument. The fans already argue over every album they have out already, I can't imagine how passionate they will be when a founding member leaves and comes back.

lots of successful bands have had original members leave and carried on without them.

The Beatles, Metallica, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest. Pretty much any band with any longevity has had members come and go.

don't forget the roatating cast of dancing marionettes that is Megadeth! 19 ex members but who's counting?

I used to be in a band back in HS with former drummer Nick Menza. Dude was a cool drummer. Mostly just jammed at his folks house. Never played out.

Pat, you forgot Pink Floyd... and to a lesser extent Bon Jovi, AC/DC, and of course Velvet Revolver losing Axl Rose (hopefully I don't have to explain that one)

Wow rob as someone who is on the inside reading your synopsis,I have to say you just might be a tad off in your understanding of the process

Hehe, you're right BP!
Perhaps rob is JUST one of the many who buy records and show tickets, allowing our fellow DT guys to be what they are. ;)

With respect, I reckon he should still be allowed to express his feelings.

Did anybody mention Deep Purple???? They are on their what 10th Mark or something? Of course the major change being Ritchie Blackmore...we are not talking about a drummer in this case (no offense to drummers of course). And look at em now...Steve has been longer in the band than Ritchie and they sound better than ever...also when Lord left, I thought that was gonna be it...Don Airey filled in quite nicely. Keep on rockin in the free world!!!
