CY I really like You man, ...especialy 'cause sharing Your time with us, common mortals, amateurs, semi-pros ...etc.

What to say about track and bass line, ...well, really professional and clear, Your bass playing is on the highest possible level, so as Your bass tone, ....everything is just excellent!

You have got a funky hat man, the slap didn't stand out like a sore thumb, just a nice fat groove, very good job, enjoyed the track, thank you.

Craig, love it. Question for you: how much freedom are you generally given in sessions like this (like how much of this was charted for you and how much was just you hitting the "kill it" button on the bass). Thx

Here's what they give me:

I. 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

V. 1 4 1 4. 1 4 1 4

Ch. 6-6-4 4. 6-6-4 4

Br b7 4 b7 4. 6-6-6-4

On and on etc. the sad bit is I could use that chart on every song I'm going to play this month. I have to add my crazy bits just to keep my sanity during these sessions. It's not exactly duke Ellington conducting. Thanks for the kind words everybody.

Pick a pop song chart. Do it over and over again. Pick a country chart. Do it over and over again. Pick a "rock" chart. Do it over and over again. This is nothing new, because something new would be scary. But I have a couple of thoughts about this anyway.

Tony Levin once said, "I'm a bass player. I LIKE doing the same thing over and over." Ed Friedland talks about his gigs where they want him to "just play the bass parts". IE, doing the same thing over and over. There is something in this that is appealing to most of us, I would guess, or we'd be playing clarinet or glockenspiel.

Having said that, we're all mostly aware that both Tony and Ed can certainly do very interesting things with any given bass - and sometimes they do those things.

Craig and I talk a little bit and I've said this to him: "You're getting away with murder." (Chuck Ward has another take on it - that Craig is screwing things up for the rest of the less talented bassists in country. I can see his point.) And it wasn't so long ago that I was asking, "Who's this Craig guy? Travis likes him? Pfffffffft." Look at me now - I have this nutty collection of Unknown Things Craig Played Bass On. You guys maybe hear the Lady A and the occasional Merkin Idolatry track like this one, but you need to hear THE OTHER STUFF. Not that there's anything wrong with being popular and successful, mind you. Something has to fund Craig's quest to return to the music of the 1500s.

Anyway. My point, if I have one, is that Craig does what he does and while I don't claim to understand how he gets away with it most of the time - he DOES. And it's goofy. YOU SHOULD HEAR THE GOOD STUFF. Ask me about it - I'll point you at it with great pleasure. He does things that are generally not allowed nor accepted in Nashvegas, at least on Big Popular Records. And while he and I pick on each other and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come, I think Craig Young is one of the best bassists I've ever heard. I've heard a lot of bassists, too.

I will tell you what someone (let's not use his entire real name as he is a rather bad-ass bassist too, but his initials are Dave Marotta) said to me earlier this year at NAMM about Craig. "He's like McCartney, but with killer tone."

So slapping on a country record? I would expect it to be Craig Young.

This is the very last time I will humiliate myself in public unless there is alcohol.

That's the one thing that I have noticed about the tracks I have heard Craig on; he's always doing some pretty cool stuff, even in some tame settings. I imagine that's why he keeps on getting the calls!
