Thanks Jacob!

I've started to search & found bits & pieces, but can't find a forum/thread that is dedicated to pick-up configurations - this is my 1st active pre-amp bass, and has the H-S configuration, so I'm on overload a bit here...downloaded the schematic from the web page, which helped a lot, but is there any "beginner's toolkit" for humbucker vs. single coil vs. (what is?) phantom coil, e.g, how bassists use the 5-way switch, etc.?

This is such a cool service - THANKS!

And... This is the part where you say "Welcome to the family!" as I just picked up a used Steve Morse in Blueburst, with 5-bolt neck. The guy I bought it from said he got it used in about 1999, and it came with a G&G case.

Having said all that, serial number is G04633 - thanks again!

Hey Rob,

The phantom coil (Or, "dummy coil") on the Sterling HS is an extra coil that is wired underneath the single-coil pickup in the neck position- We refer to this as a "stacked single-coil". The function of this extra coil is to eliminate hum that is produced when the switch is in a single-coil position. In other words, the phantom coil acts as a "humbucker", except it doesn't actually produce sound.
