Hi fellow SMOC owners..
This thread is a little celebration of the path to your first Morse..
My own begun in 2001 when seeing the 1999 Deep Purple DVD concert with the London Symphony Orchestra with Steve Morse. Prior to that I've always held EVH as my ideal but that moment forever changed me. I've heard about Steve Morse before and how he replaced Blackmore in DP and also have seen him in adverts for the original EBMM guitar in mags but I didn't know of him and have never heard any of his previous work. I remember reading about a DP concert review by a journalist and he was expounding on the virtues of this new guitarist; something like "..most of the crowd left dragging their jaws at what Steve Morse could do on the guitar.." and I was thinking 'hmm yeah right, another unknown blues guy blah blah..'. Thus hearing him the first time I was simply left amazed and I've realised, man I don't know squat!
.. Anyway, seeing him play that EBMM, I thought, man, I want that guitar, if I had that I could surely play better, it's a professional quality axe and surely that makes all the difference. For 7 years I kept thinking about it, dreaming of it etc..then one day in November 08, on a slow Friday afternoon at work it was just me and a colleague and something came over me, I said, dude, hit up the local stores on the net and if you can find an SM model, we'll go right now and I'll buy it. 5 minutes later he comes back with the affirmative, that there's one in stock at a nearby store..and I said, stuff it, it's now or never. We went straight to my bank, I retrieved 5 grand against my house loan and we drove to the store (during work hours hehe) and then I saw the Y2D whilst expecting the original.. The guy explained how this was the new model etc..it was the floyd model..I haggled and got it for 3800 off from 5500 retail..
I've been playing it since but I've also realised that it's not the guitar that makes all the difference, I was still me albeit sounding better etc..but it did make me want to keep practicing and everytime I pick it up, it just feels good.
I hope you'll share your moment and also how you came across SM.
