Why not pull out 2 of the output valves, and bingo - you have a 50 watt amp. You have to pull out either the outer two, or the inner two.

I've done that with my DSL and 5150, it works, but the sound suffers. The output transformer isn't working as hard as it should be and it does sound different, not just lower in volume. The lower volume wasn't worth the 'bad tone' that I heard, at least in my case.

I see that all over NS. What is it exactly?
Well a "BEERGARDEN" is when a town will have a dance with 1 or 2 or 3 live bands at their local stadium or ice arena and it usually happens in the summer and usually its for a cause ,local hockey ,baseball ,charity or whatever and a beer company sponsers it ;so most of the proceeds go to the group charity or organizing body and the bands get paid usually anywhere from $600-$1000 a nite depending on if your sharing the stage and usually we will all agree on 1 common system and just use our own sound guy ,sometimes its a 2 nite thing but lately they have been just doing 1 niters. All in all its a great time and everyone leaves with a Glass beer stein with the date and the other info on it that u get with a ticket purchase, some people where i live have these glasses going back to 70's

Sorry for the hijack and now back to the tubes hahahahah

side by side.....runnin full power.....u would experience a 10-15 % drop in volume...............even though the wattage is half.
volume increase is NOT linier w/ wattage increase.:)

If you pick up a 50W tube amp, you shouldn't notice a huge difference. Are you using a 4X12 cab w/ the 100W head? If so, try a 50W 2X12 combo. You should be able to turn it up a little more w/ less speakers.

Another very good option (and my preferred one) to consider is two separate 1x12 cabs with a 50 watt head, or one 1x12 extension cab for a 1x12 combo. Not only can it be very handy to grab one cab on the fly for rehearsal and such, but to my ears this rig sounds much better than a 2x12 cab does. If you're running a 50 watt head, there are many great sounding speakers that can handle 50+ watts alone.

I have used setups like this before and they are great!
