I know this is probably a repost, but I've recently switched from .9s on my JP to .10s (Ball strings, of course). The strings now feel very tense and it's very difficult to bend, the trem also does not respond as well as it did. Are JPs not compatible with .10s (Petrucci uses them, so they must be) and if not, what can I do to to fix the problem? I'm from Egypt so competent luthiers are not really available here. Thanks!

Hi Adam, and welcome.

The 10s put more tension on the guitar. What you need to do is tighten the trem screws to counteract the increased tension. The will bring your bridge back.

Be patient and make small changes. Once you do this correctly, your guitar will play just fine.

Also, you will find it more difficult to bend the strings. That's just what happens when you go to higher gauged strings.

Have fun!

I just switched from hybrids to 10's and love it. Yes it is a little harder to bend but it feels so great! Strengthen your hands some and you'll like them alot. The tone is certainly better...

Welcome aboard!

When changing gauges, especially on a floating trem, you have to adjust the springs to get the trem to float even with the body (or ever so slightly tilted backward). You're probably going to have to adjust the truss rod, because the
10's will put more tension on the neck.

You're just going to have to get used to the thicker gauge when it comes to bending. I went from 9's to hybrid's to 10's and each time it takes your fingers awhile to get used to.

Maybe you should first move to hybrid slinky's to ease your transition.

Thanks guys,

I readjusted the trem and fiddled around with the truss, and the trem is almost back to the way it was. I don't know if it's the ball strings (I used to use D'addario) but I can swear the strings are a lot tougher than the .10's I had on my old RG. I guess it's time to take my fingers to the gym :D

I'm about to make that switch on my JP6...My JP7 has 10's and it makes the playability so much better for me. Can't do chugga chugga stuff too well when your strings are "all bendy" as JP says! :p
