I am looking to do a hybrid gauge on my A.S.S. I want to do an 11-46 with a wound G string. I am current using a 10-46 with a wound G and I like the results I am getting with my piezo. With the 4-2 headstock design my E and B string are looser than I'd like so I figure changed my high 3 string to an 11 (acoustic) gauge might do the trick. Can I do this with out doing anything to the nut? I don't want to file the nut down in case I don't like the results.

BV, good analysis on the geometry!!

Yeah, I always make it a point not to "file or sand" anything unless I have the replacement part and the skill to return that back to it's original state.

With that said, I would just see how it goes first and than proceed from there.

Hi,

I use Ernie Ball Power Slinkys 11-48 on my Axis Sport in standard-tuning without any big changes, so if I were you, I would just try it ;).

Cheers...

I use 10-52 on my Silo. I only had to readjust the neck bow and lower the saddles a bit. It plays better than stock 9s IMHO.

I am sure I am going to love it tone wise. I am just worried about the nut. Those of you using 11's do you have the compensation nut? I do and that is why I have a concern about and the thick strings.

I have gone as high as 13-56 on my balls with no issues. Currently running 11's. The wound 3rd doesn't seem to bind up in the nut either.

brokenvail,

Generally I run with 10s on my Super Sports - switched from 9s with no problems .... so if you go with the 11s, I'd be interested to hear back from ya on the results.

cheers always, eh

The question still remains. How many of you using a thicker gauge have a compensated nut instead of a traditional nut?

Sorry to hijack your thread, Otto, but as I was reading this, I was thinking to myself: What a bunch of perverts we must appear to be to the uninitiated. So often we talk about ASSes, nuts, and balls. :D

Sorry for the ignorance, but how is a string looser based on the head length, if it's in pitch?

the tuning peg is closer to the bridge so the overall length of the string is shorter than other headstock designs. a shorter length requires less tension to produce the same note on a longer scale so the string would be loose by comparison.

That's why Les Paul's are a "hair" looser to play (provided all strings, etc. . . being equal); shorter string path 24.75; smaller fret margins too.

I have a compensated nut. No problems switching gauge, just readjust intonation as you would on any other guitar.
