How can a bass with a neck date of 1980 be listed as a 1979 bass?

Still, looks like a nice bass if that's your thing. I'll take a modern Ray anyday.

It seems pretty common to me, especially if the body is dated '79. My little understanding is that rarely do necks and bodies have the same date stamp. My '79 Sabre has a body dated March '79 and a neck dated Aug '79.

The last dated part is the earliest age it could be...so no matter how you slice or dice it, it's a 1980 bass. That bass went for a crazy price, 2400?? for a plain-jane natural '80? that's awefull high, but someone really wanted that bass (although I know where a clean 1st year '76 is for slightly less than that)

Vintage basses, especially MM's have their ups and downs depending on time of the year. I felt sorry for a couple members selling vintage MM's the last couple of months and seeing them not get top dollar because of the timing. But usually after tax time is when bids explode and get crazy. Between christmas and tax deadline is when I try to buy what old stuff I want because that's when sales are lower than normal.

That's all I was trying to say. Was it technically accurate? I guess you could make that argument. A little bit misleading? I think so.

It may be because I'm not flush with cash, but I've never gotten into the collector thing. I couldn't justify spending that type of coin on a bass when I could buy a few that might arguably be of better quality and cover more ground. YMMV.

It's that belief in "old bass" mojo. Or maybe it's the Leo Cult.

But when Leo Fender was building basses, they came out of the factory as NEW instruments, as far as I know,

Jamerson's tone came from a bass that had been recently purchased. Still, some are willing to ignore common sense ("listen to the vintage tone" when the bass in question was a year old) and part with The Big Money in an attempt to capture something that came from the player rather than the instrument.

Ah, we get old, we get nostalgic, same old story, trying to recapture "the good old days", I suppose.

Gimme a fresh new Bongo, eh? Or a 20th SR5.

Maybe some people believe that...I don't, I just sometimes like old things or the original product, and my tone has never sounded like a 1960's recording. I've also never paid big money for any of my stuff.

In Some Cases older is better for instance Fender Basses, Fender will never Nail the feel, sound, the vibe as they did in the 50's or 60's.

However, Ernie Ball Music Man basses Smoke anything Leo ever did with Music Man in the 70's.
Call it what you want and for what it's worth this is my opion. Having owned 90 Leo Fender Music Man Basses and Now Having 172 Ernie Balls as of now, this is how i come to my conclusion.

I own two Leo MMs. (77 & 78 just bought) I own a 60s Fender Jazz bass. Played the new MMs.

The tone out of my 77 cannot be replicated by any new MM. Yes, I can tell the difference. I am a tone freak.

The 60's Jazz.... sits in the closet collecting dust. Dont care for the neck, nor the tone... But it looks cool, and I picked it up for next to nothing.

But as for me loving the tone out of my and not that interested in the newer stuff. That is just me.

Everyone will have their opinion of tone, and what price they are willing to put on it.

No matter what the opinions are here, at least we are all passionate about what we do!!!!!!!!!!

I know where you are coming from on this.
My Les Paul has chunks M.I.A. all done over the last 30+ years.
However a good buddy of mine makes a living building top quality guitars and he is inundated with orders for reliced guitars.
It's very clever how he does it and you have to be impressed with his work - but nahhhhhh ! you have to be kidding paying top dollar for a new guitar made to look 30 years old.
He's not complaining though !!
