hi

My 1991 Silhouette's Single PickUp picks up lots of interferance (e.g. hum).
Is there a less noisy replacement to the original?

thanks

Lots of noiseless pickups about....I like Lace Gold Sensors & Fender Samarium Cobalts (though since my SS has a Silent Circuit I've never thought about changing the pickups in that one).
Is this a new problem? Maybe try taking it to a tech for a checkup or some extra shielding??

It's an old problem....

It's an old problem - and it's about time I got it fixed.
I just want to know the rught path to the solution.

Since I know very little about the internal workings of a guitar, my first course of action would always be to find a proper man to look at it.

Is it markedly noisier than other single coil pickups or is it just the normal single coil noise?

Even with the Silent Circuit, you're going to get some noise. You can adjust it though- small trim pot on top. If you have one, maybe you can get it closer.

You have a few options. The Suhr backplate is cool if you have a trem- it's basically a big loop antenna that will remove hum. But it's pricey and you'll need a non reverse wound middle p'up.

In the noiseless camp there are several options. I've evaluated a bunch and my personal favourite is the Bill Lawrence L-200s. The SCNs are his design and winding machines; the 200 is even better than the SCNs and to my ears it's better than the Dimarzio Areas (which are quite good too). (There's probably nobody on the planet that knows more about pickups than Bill, the man is literally a genius and I don't use that term loosely.)

You also have Lace, Kimnan, etc. But I think the L-200s are the best of the bunch. Just my personal opinion, for what it's worth.

I've tried my AL in the studio. plugged thru a Metal Zone or a CrunchBox with a Tubezone OD as a booster. The amp used was a Mesa Boogie Single Rect. I played relatively loud. a 50w amp played at 50% volume, and 50% gain. I'd say that's relatively loud. I needed to put my 25dB attenuating earplugs on.

And the guitar?

Total silence man... Even the minimal feedback was totally controllable. And these are real single coils we're talking about.

I'm impressed.:D
