Hi all,

I've had an account on here for some time but this is my first post and could use some input. I'm about to purchase my first Bongo but the I think I'm going to need a psychologist to figure out which color!

The colors differ so greatly in every picture that I see it's hard to make a reasonable judgement. I've seen pictures of egyptian smoke that look, gold, brown, tan, metallic, and somewhere in between depending on the lighting.

I was initially planning to pick between the graphite, egyptian smoke, or a metallic blue (can't remember official name).

I've always gone with darker, bland colored instruments but now all of a sudden the desert gold and other "bright, standout" colors are becoming more appealing.

Of course I'll be happy with whatever I purchase but do anybody have an opinion based on a Bongo they currently own?

Thanks, Tudedog (Mark)

How can you go wrong with Stealth (all black) or Desert Gold (my favourite)? You looking for 4 or 5 string?

Well I'm not sure about the Stealth but I have to say the Desert Gold is really becoming an option (especially with Black Ice pickguard). There's an awkwardness about getting what I would consider a "bright" standout colored bass when I've always gone for the opposite, but I think it's time for a change.

Oh, and it's gotta be a 5'er.

welcome to the forum tubedog!

if you like black the stealth is your thing.. the only non-black on them is the nylon washer on the strapbuttons ;)

desert gold is now a discontinued color, but there might still be some out there..
good luck on your hunt!

Ok Strummer... no picture, no black pickguard... (hint hint ;))

Egyptian smoke is discontinued too, but it's really a nice color... My main fetish lately has been my DDII Bongo 5HHp - the thing is absolutely incredible (sounding & looking)... Welcome to the forum and no matter which color Bongo you decide on, I'm pretty sure it won't be the last one!

I am a Stealth kinda guy myself -- I even have black strings on mine. That said, a lot of folks on here like Desert Gold and I've also seen some love for "True Gold."

You mentioned that you don't like the Stealth look -- what about this one? (It even has the Piezo!)

The Perfect Bass - Bass Guitars, Amps, Gear!

Thanks, it's not that I don't like the stealth look or anything and I definitely like the one you linked to. It's just that I've had so many plain dark colored guitars and basses over the past 20 years I'd love to break the mold and try something else out.

Help! The Desert Gold is starting to pull me in....

In that case permit me to torture you.

You can thank me later. Or curse me, when you find that there aren't any left.

Well, I did find one that's an HS. I was looking for an HH but may have to compromise. As you mentioned there aren't many left!

I think you are on the right track with your decision. The Bongo is a bold bass, in both styling and sound. Such a bass deserves a bold color IMO. I know they aren't always the best sellers, but I've always preferred the extremely bright Bongos...electric blue, desert gold, lava pearl, candy red, etc. You don't get a Bongo to blend in, you get one to stand out....WAY out. Why not let the color of your Bongo reflect that decision?

(No offense to the Stealth lovers in the house, just not my cup o' tea).

None taken -- variety is the spice of life. I agree that the Bongo is a bold bass. That's one of the many reasons I like it so much. That said, I think Stealth Black is as bold as it gets. IMO, it's the bass/color that Darth Vader would play!

Bass Central has the Desert Gold still. Tell Beaver that Ziggy says "Hi".

Get a bold one and also a model not made anymore. At least you have a chance to sell in case you don't like it. But the DG is really nice. So is the Electric Blue. I have avoided the hot red color (Lava?)

Bongos look best in bright. Somehow they just don't do Goth. But that is me and I would even buy a purple one!

Beav is who I usually deal with and he's only got a DG HS right now. I really wanted an HH so I may be considering the blue.

Could not have said it better myself.

Once the Blue Dawn is back home I'll be sure to post pics, I'm looking forward to arranging a group shot (especially since this hot summer has meant I've had to really polish the basses after every gig, luckily not that many lol).

Did I ever thank you properly for giving me the black guard? I know I kept your address, so maybe this fall something will be found in your mailbox?

i think you can only get the graphite color if you're getting the stealth version, i think.
