Seems that's what most everyone is thinking. Me too! This is going to end my interest in L2000s.
My used Sterling that I almost accidentally bought about 3 years ago sent me into an insane (for me) bout of EB GAS. I now have a Sabre & a SR5, all fretless. But the Sterling remains my favorite. But I've always thought it could be even better with a neck pup. I almost had a luthier modify it with 2 Bart MMs, but it seemed too expensive and I didn't want to ruin a good thing. I'm so glad I didn't now!
I'm not overly fond of my late pre EB Sabre. It does have tons of low end thump, but it lacks the clarity of the Sterling. Seems to turn to low end muck with a live band. The Sabre sounds best to me with just the bridge pup, so what's the point? I'm expecting great things from a two pup Sterling.
One thing I'll say in favour of the Sabre is that I think it's one of the most handsome basses ever made. especially in the classic sunburst scheme. I know the oval pickguard is a Stingray trademark (and I do find my dark blue Sterling handsome too), but the Sabre set up is spectacular IMHO. I've also noted an extreme similarity in the bodies of Sabre & Sterling.
So now that we've all collectively talked into making 2-pup Rays & Sterlings, maybe we can talk them into more. You EB guys do read this stuff, right? So, besides considering the pickguard scheme, here's some more suggestions.
One thing that seemed appealing to me about the L2000 is the active/passive capability with tone control in the passive mode. Again, I realize that the Stingray is synonmous with active electronics, but hey, it's a brave new world of more options here.
One thing I don't like about the Sabre & the L2000 is the lack of a blend control or separate volume controls for the two pups. I actually would prefer some way to blend the two as well as a pup selector switch.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to all of this new stuff. If you can really make a better Sterling, my hat will be off to you. And I'll buy one too!
