Hi,
I'm new here. I've been really into the bass lately and I've been digging MusicMan basses for a while. I was ready to purchase one, when a buddy says he has a 20th anniversary one that he might be interested in selling.

This model is incredibly beautiful. It looks like a natural color with a flame, a tort guard and tort binding. Single humbucker. The neck seems to have some flame too. This is obviously a top of the line bass. Also, I've played it and it feels and sounds nice.

The condition is 9 out of 10. He's looking for $1700, is this too much? What's the going rate for this? Or should I just get a regular used Stingray for half. I don't mind spending the extra money if it's worth it. (meaning that if I ever want to sell it, I won't take a beating)

Thank you,
Jerseydrew

One more thing, if anybody has some pics they want to share, it would be appreciated.

First, welcome! :)

IMHO you'd be better off just finding you a used SR or Sterling and paying half that. I think what he's asking for a 20th Anniv. is a little steep. Let us know what you decide to do and pics are mandatory. :)

I have to disagree, boys. 1700 for a used 20th isn't bad, and the prices for those have been going up steadily.

Depends on if you want just a player or if you want something that will continue to increase in value, I'd say.

I want to throw in with Jack and Steve and agree that the price is pretty good on the 20th aniversary 'Ray.

My 2 cents. If you want a player, get a regular used 'Ray. If you get a lot of road wear on the anniversary 'Ray, it won't hold it's value very long.

Thank you. I thought it was a little expensive but since it was an anniversary model, maybe they were going for crazy money and this was a deal.

To switch the subject a bit, I was contemplating the Sterling model as well. I will have to go over to the local GC and try one. (I won't buy it there though). I've never tried a Sterling. I've heard that the neck is slimmer and the body is a bit smaller. That sounds good to me because I'm only 5'7" and my hands are a bit on the small side.

One more thing and please don't get mad. I've heard comments on other forums that the Sterling model is for girls and real men play the Stingray. I'm not trying to stir the pot but why would someone say that? Just because it's a tad smaller?

thanks again,
jerseydrew

Let's hope Arin doesn't see that Sterling comment. :D

I'm only 5' 8" and find the Sterling neck to be far too small. Gotta have a nice chunk of wood under my fingers. Tis why i'm a SR5 player. :D

Sounds more like ignorance.

Yeah I'm sure. I don't believe that stuff anyway. I'm just pissed my local guitar shop only carries the SR and not the Sterling. He can certainly order one for me but I would like to try it out first.

I have no problem paying my local Mom & Pop guitar shop a little extra. Hell, I'd rather give them the money instead of GC. They're helped me so much over the years with just their wisdom alone. What has GC done for me? Nada

I don't want to turn this into a local shop vs. GC thread, I'm sure there's tons of them here already (as well as every other forum I'm on)

I'm still thinking about the $1700 20th anniversary. It's a lot of cash but it was beautiful. I might even say it was the most beautifull MM I ever saw.

How often do these things come up for sale? I hate to miss it but I just don't have that kind of cash at the moment.

Got a local GC that has one in stock? Try one there or ping the board and see if somebody close by has one to try. I know there are a good amount of Jersey-ites on this board just not sure where relative to you.

Haven't seen many at all. Go after what you like. Don't let the bling factor bias your opinion. If somebody offered me one for a nice price I'd probably decline or flip it. I like my Bongos. It is all a matter of personal taste.

I bought a 20th Anniversary SR New when they came out. At the time my main bass was a '93 Sterling.
I sold the 20th within 6 months, and I still have the Sterling.
YMMV...

For fifty bucks more, you can get a brand-new 30th Anniversary stingray (see GC's June flyer). Then you'd have the mahogany tone block and other cool appointments of that model.

Plus, you'll be contributing to MusicMan's bottom line.

The 20th Anniv. Stingray is pretty rare. About 750 were made with maple necks, 450 or so with RW boards. It will never be worth less than $1700 if you take care of it, so look at it as a free rental with a $1700 deposit.
I used to play mine out all the time. pretty light weight, great tone, good looks.

Or ping Jack since we have 30 of those on order ourselves at same price including a few lined and unlined fretlesss ones. ;)
