Off Topic 212 cab too much/loud for home use?

The advantage of having several speakers is the sound projection. For the same volume, the sound will be distributed more evenly in the room.

^a sound quality that I'm looking for.......in my mind the opposite of "boxy".

Again, though, the speaker is just the final filter. Make sure you actually like the sound of your amp before you go invest a ton of dough. Lots of small amps sound, well small.

I've had my share of boxy sounding amps that I just couldn't get on with, tried through multiple speakers and cabs. YMMV.

Hey beej, you still using the Suhr Badgers? I recall that you did, unless I'm going crazy which is very possible This ridiculous Friday. Anyway, not to derail but those amps sound amazing for the lower wattage style amps. Plus they have built in power scaling that Can take it down to 1 watt or something like that.

I did have both, but have since sold them. Had the 18 quite a while- great little amp, though it's pricey. Power scaling definitely works well on them. I still have the 1x12 cab, sounds very big.

My main amp is a Guytron GT100, I just can't beat that amp, always gig with it. Sounds great at any volume, but it's big and heavy. So I kept trying smaller amps for rehearsals, etc. These days I'm using a Jet City 20 head with the Dave Friedman mods. I've also since put in the Metro loop kit. Great little head, sounds huge and has a ton of gain. Surprisingly, I'm mostly using it for clean to gritty stuff (current band is doing covers ranging from Steely Dan to Tower of Power). Crank up the master and dial down the gain and it actually sounds really great clean. A good old Marshall vibe, but in light, cheap package. No plans to move it out any time soon.

Jason.....no sweat man. I was just saying that you are/were making valid comments and that I understand that the amp is truly what is driving the sound. I wasn't saying that you were repeating yourself. I appreciate the input....from everyone....that's why I posted the topic.

So I picked up the open back Avatar 212 cab. Big difference in sound quality. The 212 is considerably louder than the 112 I have. The sound is definately fuller and has much more "presence". Great improvement over what I was using before...much more the sound that I was wanting to hear. It's really opened the amp up and improved the sound of it.

I especially like that when I have to play quieter (night), the sound is still nice and full. My 112 sounded small at lower volumes.

Inspired to play more!
