Is there really that much difference?
Most guitars seem to have 22.
If I didn't have those extra 2 would I really miss them?

Well, it depends only on your playing style.

Some say that 24 fret guitars sound worse that 21-22 fret because of neck pickup placement. I would say it's different :)

Are you talking about Music Man guitars or all in general?

I enjoy having a guitar with 24 frets, simple because of the two octaves. I´ve played some Satriani and Petrucci stuff lately with my PRS Standard 22, and I´m cursing all the time, because my other guitar (24 frets) is tuned to a lower tuning. There are quite a few notes played on the 23-24 frets by those two guys... Well, I hope you got it, because my native language isn´t English...

I believe guitars w/ 22 frets sound a little darker. Which is a good thing in my book.

I like the 24 frets myself. Just a personal preference. There are tons of great guitarists who only used 22, so, I guess it is preference.

Hi guys
Certainly if you are into instrumental/prog rock a la Petrucci and Vai 24 frets are useful.

However, you should be OK playing Satch with a 22 fretter, as all his signature Ibanez guitars have 22 frets (I think). If you're more of a Morse prog rock/classic rock player you shouldn't really miss those last two frets. To be honest, even with Steve Vai, there isn't a lot you actually need a 24 fret guitar for - you can always bend up from that 22nd fret to the 2nd octave on the first two strings quite easily anyway (especially with the good access you get on the EBMM range).

Better still, it is definitely a sound reason for having two Balls!

Thats kind of hard to answer, l have a JP6 (24 fret) and 2 Lukes (22 Fret), and unless l play a song or write a song that requires a 24 fret, thats when l start to get picky. But l do love playing my Lukes, but then l love my JP6, don't make me choose GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!

does it sound cool on a 24 fret guitar to hold down a couple notes at the 12th fret and do some tapped harmonics at the 24th?

With a 24 fret neck, the neck pickup doesnt sound as good. I believe this is because it does not sit over the 24th fret harmonic node point.

You forgot to mention that it was just your opinion. :p

IMO, it sounds just fine.

Its just every 24 fret guitar I have ever played, the neck pickup doesnt sound 'right'. Something about the harmonic content of the note seems off. My friends Patrick Eggle is a perfect example. It has a SD Custom custom in the bridge, and a SD 59 in the neck. The guitar sings, except on the neck pickup. Just doesnt sound 'right' to me.

Thanks for the info everyone.

It seems like only on rare occasions would I need those extra 2 frets.

fogman,

just to throw my 2 cents in..

I don't think the fret count would be a deal breaker for me if the guitar was awesome in every other respect.

I like having 24 frets, just in case I need 'em, but I can make due without them. Just gotta bend a little in the uppermost frets, that's all.

I'm still trying to find one of those 36 fret guitars from the late 80's that made sounds only dogs can hear :D

24, 22.
Tomato, tomato.

With my martin I never get past 15, but it still mesmerizes me.
