Son had a wrestling clinic in SF so I had a few free hours in town to finally check out the Big Al, 25th, and Sterling 5. Went to the GC on Van Ness.

First, about GC. I (along with understanding spouse) got there shortly after opening. Bill, a guitar/bass salesman, was very helpful. He was knowledgable and a good guy. They had one Big Al, one 25th (4 string HSS), and a couple of Sterling 5s. Figured these would be doled out one at a time, but no. Bill lined up 3 stands, we pulled down all 3 basses, and sat me next to a Markbass rig going into a Markbass 2-10" cab. Allowed me as much time as I wanted to A/B/C the 3 basses. Each bass was set up well, had pretty fresh strings, and was already in tune when pulled from the wall. Really I couldn't ask for a better shopping experience.

I own a HH Bongo 5 so that is where I am coming from. I really thought the Big Al was going to be perfect and the internet photos of the 25th didn't do much for me. The Big Al was cool, but holy smokes, the 25th is something special! My wife was blown away by the difference in tone. The bass felt very comfortable, however I didn't have a strap...holding it up though it seemed to balance perfectly. The Sterling 5 was also bad ass but the 25th just knocked me out. If they had a 5 string in stock I may have walked out with a bass.

One edit - I had read that the control layout was confusing. I think the design is genius, very intuitive. The fabulous Bongo preamp with a passive option. Pushbutton on/off for the pickups...I really think this would be easy for on-the-fly changes during a gig. There were really no bad sounds in the bass and I appreciate that you can't accidentally turn it off.

Now for the questions:

It looks like the HH has the bridge pickup farther from the bridge than the HSS. How different does the bridge H sound between the HSS and the HH?

I'm guessing the 25th will have the finshes similar to the axis when introduced at NAMM (my fretless is already a blood red finish slightly darker than the venetian red and I would like a different color). I think the mahogany tone block will not be a feature on the regular model...how much of a difference will this make in tone?

Lastly, I'm not sure how the ordering windows work. Is there some overlap when the regular model finshes/features have been announced and I can still order the 25th?

Thanks for your input. Looks like I will be calling around the greater bay area to see where I can try out 25ths in HH and in 5 string models. Guess I need to decide whats more important - the mahogany tone block or getting a different color.

The H is closer to the bridge on the HSS, the H on the HH is the same spot as a normal Stingray. As for sound, this probably makes the H on the HSS more mid present and punchy, maybe not as "full" as the H on the HH.

The order window for the 25th is closed, but many dealers still have stock, there is a 5 string HH in stock at the Knoxville GC currently (and likely others at GC's throughout the country). Also check out www.theperfectbass.com, www.dubaldomusic.com or www.basscentral.com... I am sure any one of the four will have a model like the one you desire.

The production model will most likely not have the mahogany tone block.

The 25th rocks, buy 1... or 5. :)

Mahogany Tone Block = Holy Grail

About the sound difference between the HSS and the HH, I'd like to know myself... (although I'm thoroughly happy with the multitude of sounds I get from my 25th HH)

1. Couldn't get the feel and tone out of my head;

2. Experts from Tennesse and Switzerland unanimously agree;

3. This month is the 50th anniversary of me and this is a 25th anniversary instrument (mathematical aberration? Not likely);

4. Wife says "stop dithering and just buy the damn thing"

So I don't have 10 reasons, but I pulled the trigger anyway. Early next week I will have a 25th 5 string, HH, rosewood fretboard, flame top in my hands. Thanks to Dan in customer service for pointing me to dealers who had that model in stock...saved me a bunch of time.

Unfortunately I will be selling my Bongo 5 HH and a lovely custom shortscale from local luthier Mike Dolan to finance this acquisition. Well worth it...the 25th is something special.

25th 5 HH Rosewood board, flame is here

The bass was delivered yesterday. I've owned a lot of basses including many of the high end brands (alembic, fodera, MTD). For me, this is the best bass I have ever put my hands on. Comfortable to play. Huge array of tones. The thought that went into the design. Can't accidently turn it off. Usually when a bass is this versatile ther are, unfortunately, a lot of weird useless tones that lurk in the controls. I spent a couple of hours getting to know this bass and never did come across a bad sound.

Great job. My complements to the chefs.

Congratulations, you will not be disappointed. The more I play mine the more I love it! Like I had said in several earlier posts, I've never played a bass that was close to this quality in many ways! BP and Company held nothing back in the design of this instrument! Thanks again BP! :D

Congrats! The 25th is beyond iconic. Oh and I think there is a little rule:
no pics no bass! All the best

BP i would absolutely love one of those, but sadly just cannot afford one. My mean stealth bongo already got me near broke in summer ;) but I don't regret the choice at all, totally badass killer bass.
The 25th are expensive - while I'm sure they are worth every single penny and have great value. Still they cost a lot. It doesn't matter how fantastic the value/price ratio is if it's still too expensive for you to afford.

The 4HH 25th is my personal wet dream. It's not flat black and still has lots of sex appeal... i hope i will be able to get one of these one day.

THanks for the Support...The 25th is really fabulous and not many people bought them

Does that mean that there are additional 25ths that are still at the factory if I wanted to get another one? I am thinking of getting another one but I am not sure how many of them are still out there. Could I still order one if I can't find what I am looking for from my GC rep?

Peace,

T

Probably not. Every EBMM is made to order. If it didn't get ordered, it probably didn't get made.

Hi Tom,

They way I understand is the order window for these is over. There are a number in stock at various retailers. Since I wanted a particular combination I called EB customer service and they were able to point me to a couple of dealers who had what I wanted. It turned out there was only one still available when I called...whew!
