3 dots and 4 dots

What was the exact first year they used 4 dots instead of 3 behind the 12th fret on the 2band stingray ..thx
.
*My records show pics of a Pre-EB Music Man Sabre Bass with a body date of 14 Nov 1983. It has 3 dot markers past the 12th fret. I believe Sabre and Sting Ray necks were inter-changeable.

*Pre-EB Music Man shut their doors Dec 1983 (Christmas Eve)

*I also have a pic of the first Ernie Ball Sting Ray Bass 1984 (per BP). It has 4 dot markers past the 12th fret. It was latter (1986) used as a test mule for the new 3EQ.

On the above it would appear to be 1984 for the 4 dots. I doubt it would have been Dec 1983 (a month before Pre-EB shut their doors).

Pre-EB also did Basses for the Japanese market but don't recall any 4 dots.

Really ?? So the very first 3band stingray was in 87??? Wow. I must of got some wrong info because I bought a 1984 3band pre amp replica from a guy over seas.. he said he models it from a 84 stingray 3band hmmmmm

Ok so theirs a certain bassist that no one is aware of his actually stingray year.. it's a natural 2 band ..I'm tryng to find out if it's a pre erniball wich I think you helped out with allready and what exact year pre ernieball it is ..I wasn't sure if the string dividers being a and d or d and g could narrow it down even more..you seem to know more than anybody, sorry if I'm bugging ya..thx for the knowledge

Do you have pics...preamp...body (front and back)...headstock (front and back)? serial number?

Im really just going off super old footage via 91 - 94 or 95 ,old videos on YouTube ..slowing them down.. zooming them in ,,freeze framing , that's how i figured the dot situation out,, I havnt dove into the string retainer as yet, as far as how I'm researching everything at least .But one thing is he definitely doesn't have a stock bridge. And it kinda looks like he puts tape over his pup, for it looks like it kinda is peeling back towards the tops and the bottoms ,wich I hear helps the clanking sound of the strings hitting magnets when you either player super hard or have low action...so definitely no serial numbers as of yet .just 3 dots so it's a pre ernieball for sure ,seems to be a bad ass bridge one (black).. and I'm gonna check out the string retainers.but sounds like if it's 3 dots it's gonna be pre ernie 77 to 83. It's also kinda hard to see his pole pieces on his pup..was any body making replacement pups for a stingray with out pole pieces from 77 to 92? Thx again.
