Forum Newb here...

I don't want to start some sort of holy war, or anything like that. Heck, this may be a beaten to death subject, but I have searched this forum and all over the net and can't seem to find an answer.

Why are the pickguards different on the Stingray 5 basses than they are on the Stingray 4 basses? I will eventually be buying a stingray 5 once I recover from my NS-CR5M, but I would really like to have the standard oval PG with the chrome plate under the knobs on a 5 string. I always have the option of paying a little more to have this custom done i suppose, but I just wanted to try and get an answer as to if there is a real reason they are like that. I really think that the current guards on the 5 strings are kinda ugly, but other than that I love the basses and will not let such a small issue keep me from buying one in the near future.

In my search on this forum, I saw a post about a Forum LTD bass, perhaps this could be an option for the Forum LTD bass if it were ever to be made.

I think it was made that way because the bass player usually stands in the back and is hard to see. The unique pg keeps folks from rushing the stage to see what kind of bass is making that wonderful sound. :D :D Makes the SR 5 easy to spot therefore easy to sell.

Heck, this may be a beaten to death subject

It comes up from time to time. It was TRULY flogged mercilessly over on Talk Bass for a while. I never really figured it out - it wasn't like the SR5 was introduced yesterday.

Don't know what to tell you other than they come like that. Anything different, you'll have to do it yourself. I've seen some attempts....nothing I'd suggest you try, as they all looked like a big bag of rats.

Remember the pots are attached to the pickguard so you'll have to figure that out.

The SUB 5 has a 'regular' oval pickguard - something you may already know.

The Bongo PG is also quite a bit smaller.

Good luck.

And welcome.

Does it have different routing? Besides under the pots, is there any channel going from the pup to the controls? Is it at all different from a SR4?

That is basically what I was wondering, aside from having to make the guard from a 4 string wider for the pup, what would keep someone from slappin a 4 string guard on and getting the chrome plate to mount the knobs to?

I just figured out the answer to my own question. The Stingray 5 has a 3 way switch on it, the stingray 4 does not. What about the Stingray 4 HH or HS you say? Well, there is not a chrome plate to mount the controls to, they are mounted to the body and just have the oval pg only. If it weren't for the 3 way switch it looks like, you could do a swap for the 4 string parts. I would imagine a highly skilled person could do it and make it look like it came from the factory that way, I however am not quite that person, I could come close though :)

Not to worry: one of the the only ways you could start a holy war here would be to buyout BP and then change the design of the SR5 pg
- and it don't look like BP is gonna give up for a day or 2 yet
- meanwhile, maybe you'd like a BONGO5 as an alternative
~

You make a convincing argument however
- sorta reminds me of General Motors approach to 'options'
- particularly the 'Oldsmobile' division

The thang of it is, if you was to take something that is, and make it something it wasn't, then it would be something else, and it wouldn't be what it is
~

True confession:
- I *do* like the SR5 as it is, and for me
- the biggest problem is 'I can't see the dang thing when I'm playing'

Now hold on a minute here....shouldn't that say "and it wouldn't be what is was"? because it surly "IS" somthing now.

Yes well sterlings have a 3 way switch and it in no way affects the pickguard.

I should have put the Sterlings in this statement too, as they do not use a chrome backplate either...

I like the Stingray 5 pickguard, dammit.
+1 I used to kinda wish the SR5 had a more SR4ish pickguard, but now I love everything about the SR5. I couldn't imagine it with a differently shaped PG.
