5er Doubts

I've been playing 5s for almost 10 years now and am admittedly addicted to low-D, but I'm starting to consider going back to a 4. I was messing around with a 4 at GC the other day and found it to be much easier to play.

Has anyone out there played a 5 for a long time, then switched to a 4 without regrets?

You should regret the things you've done, not those you didn't do.
Maybe best to get a 4 string and try how it fits with your current bands...

I did the switch just last month, after trying for over 8 years to get a proper grip on that fifth string in vain. I love it. Band loves it. And there's still that Hipshot D-Tuner on order to get me the low D back...


BTW, forgot to add: I am keeping the fivers... just in case...

I played 5's for 3-4 years exclusively, then I switched back to 4's and had a blast. For reasons unknown to myself, I went back to a 5 and I'm not enjoying it as much. I'm looking for the right used Sterling HS to pop up and I'm going back to 4's. I find the 5 to be useful, but the 4 is more fun. I find I'm more creative on a 4..

OK, I'm over it. I've been a little lacking for practice time lately and I'm sure that is a big part of why my 5er felt a little uncomfortable after playing a 4.

Thanks for the input. I'm still thinking about getting a 4 to mess around with, but my 5er will stay my #1. When the Sterling 5 comes out, I'll either get that or a Bongo 5 and then I'm sure I'll be glad I stayed with the 5er.

I've been playing the Sterling the last month or so, really digging the 4 string and the tone I was getting and thought the same thing. The past couple weeks though, I've been back to the SR5 and loving it again . The guys I'm playing with like it better for some reason too. I'm definitely more comfortable playing the 5, I think it was a phase I still love the Sterling sound, just a different animal.

I own both 4s and 5s, sometimes I just like the feel of the four string but for the most part I play a 5.

There was a time when I had an SR5 and a SUB5. I sold them to switch back to 4 strings. Then went back to 5er very quickly, even before considering mounting a hipshot.

I'm nice on 4ers too (though don't own any at this time), but I guess I couldn't live any more without at least a 5er. But to each his own.
