Hi everyone, its my first post here. I'm considering getting an EBMM JP. However, since I already have 2 six-string guitars, I've begun to seriously think about the seven-string version. Is there any big difference between a 6 string and a 7 string? What I mean is, will I be able to get used to the 7 string? The reason I'd like a 7 string is because its different, and I think that an extra string would simply give me more option and ideas as far as playing goes. Any comments?

Ultimately, you should try one if you can because it's going to be a totally personal thing.

However, keep in mind that the extra string requires a wider neck & fretboard, so if you're really into a narrow fretboard, you might not like the extra width.

I don't play a 7-string myself, so I can't offer much more. You know you're getting a world class guitar with any EBMM guitar. So if you're going to own a 7-string it might as well be a good one like the Petrucci. ;)

Thanks. Yeah, that's what I figured as far as the fretboard goes and the quality of EBMM guitars. I guess what I'm really asking is, are there any cons to playing a 7 string? In my mind, I could just do everything I can on a 6 string, except just a little more.

The only con I can see is getting used to the 7th string. I have two JP-6 and a JP-7. They are two different animals. I am still not used to my JP-7, but have found it very playable. I'm just really used to the JP-6. The 7 string does "more" if you will, but the fretboard is noticeably wider and takes some getting used to. I say, play one before you buy one. Mine is fully loaded with the piezo, and is a wonderful guitar with many fun possibilities. Like I said, it takes some getting used to.

Everyone is pretty different. For some the transition is too difficult and awkward. For me, I got my first seven string a couple of hours before a gig and played for five hours that night. Sure I hit the D on the low B a couple of times reaching for a G chord but after the first set I was comfy.

I actually am kind of a seven string nut anyway. I haven't been able to be comfortable on a six string since, even though my main guitar right now is a six. Of course my problem was that I couldn't find a seven string with piezo so I had to play sixes. Then after I heard that EB did have the option I jumped on it. Now I get the best of both worlds. As soon as my beloved arrives that is... :D

It shouldn't be much longer actually. It was in setup on Sept 3rd. After it's done it only has to go across the country twice and it will be mine, oh yes it will be mine. After that I'm thinking of selling off the rest of my sixes. They just don't feel as natural to me. :)

Well, the biggest advantage I found with the Universe was the extra resonance you get with the extra wood! Having an additional string is occasionally useful but I tended to end up playing it like a six string instead! Also tends to get you into trouble if you occasionally cheat and use your thumb for sixth string chords! I started noticing this a lot with some of the Van Halen transcripts.

7 strings are definitely fun and different but I tend to have one guitar at a time so the Uni is going and the Luke should be here soon. Would I buy a 7 in the future? Have to say I doubt it. I've tried it, liked it but am glad to go back to normality!!!

The JP 7's neck is thin enough you can still use your thumb for chords if you need to. I played a Universe a couple of times, I was actually shocked at how thick it's neck was! The EBMM is much more comfortable (IMO).

This was my first 7 string and I never played a JP-7. My thought was, if it is as good as a JP-6, I would get used to it. It is as good. I like it, just takes some getting used to is all for me.

I'd echo the earlier comments about the Universe's neck - I found it really difficult to get used to (especially as my other guitar at the time was a JEM7V). In fact I never did get used to and as I didn't go for too much down tuning I sold it. Lovely looking guitar though.

Definitely try before you buy and if you can, have a long session rather than just a quick noodle.
