Greetings all, just joined the forum though I've been a hardcore stingray fan since I tried one for the first time in 2000 and bought one new in Aug.01 (first new guitar I've bought, had to have one, though looking back I don't know how I did it, at 21, out of high school but yet to get a real job, living with my best friend in Vancouver doing the music thing while living on $10 an hour washing cars during the day, living off kraft dinner, and I had 0 credit back then to top it off)

Anyway, I aquired an 85' a couple months back and freaking love it, though I don't know if it'll ever take over as my go to bass, the 01 has a bit beefier a neck and the lack of finish just feels like home. I have a couple questions that I thought some of you folks might be able to answer.

Do you think this is Nitro? I did the search thing and haven't seen anything to make me think EBMMs had nitro finishes but anything I've ever seen with this kinda checking was 60s vintage fenders and gibsons (I'm not one of these nitro is everything kind of guys, I'm just curious)

Any guesses what the sticker that was here said? it looks like it was under the finish and I'm pretty convinced the finish is original.

Here's a headstock shot, I'm pretty proud of having a bass with that transitional logo. A neat side note the bassist I bought it from is currently playing with a band that includes a member of the Grapes of Wrath who were one of the first bands I ever got really hooked on, I used to get their stuff out on vinyl out of the Calgary public library in grade 6. The guy never gigged or recorded with this bass, but he did buy it in Ontario and bring it to Alberta, I've never seen a vintage Stingray for sale in Calgary (though guess I still never have, if 25 years is officially vintage it became vintage a month after I bought it) Oh, and I've gone back to school and gotten a 'real job' since so it was nice not to live off KD for this one.

On a side note I have a hipshot bass extender for it and I've gone to a machinist who's going to make me a new post for it to match the schaller posts for a six pack of beer, I'll let you know how it turns out. I can handle it on the 01, but I think the thinner headstock on the 85 made it look even worse.

Oh yeh, was searching the forum to find out what the correct allen key size is for this bass, I found 1/8" mentioned and I have tried this but it felt pretty loose, figured it's not metric so I think this has been stripped out a bit which makes me kinda nervous. Anybody know if this nut replacement would be correct:

Fender-style Bullet Truss Rod Nut at Stewart-MacDonald

I'm not sure what the finish is. I don't think it's Nitro.

The correct bullet truss nut is available from Ernie Ball.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm actually glad to know that a non-nitro finish can achieve this kind of vibe. I bought my 01 brand new (I buy almost nothing new, I think I like the challange of finding awesome used gear) with the plan to one day wear the paint right off it, but the legitimate way, I like to know the story behind every dint and ding (though I don't abuse the thing to make it happen quicker, I still cring when I do ding it, kinda messed up really) Anyway, turns out that's a pretty tough paint job, I'm coming up on nine years in and it's just starting to look like it's been played. I love the vibe of this 85 but it does feel like cheating almost in the same way as buying a reliced new guitar, it has personality, but not the personality I gave it.
