This is the 3rd Ernie Ball that I've bought and I think I'll always stick with the brand. I had to sell my newer model axis super sport last year and I bought a sub1, which has been nice to play too. Yesterday, I found this 99 Axis Sport in the pawn shop for $600.

In the music man product line is the Axis Sport a step up from the Super Sport?

Also curious to see if anyone else has one of these older model Axis Sport. I've had a hard time finding much information about it online, although the guys at EB where kind enough to look up the serial number for me so I could get my born on date.

I'm considering selling the Sub1 (brown w/strap locks and no case) if anyone is interested in a good deal. Although the thought of putting the Axis neck on the Sub body has crossed my mind. Probably not a great idea though.....

The Sport was made with a solid ash body and came with a variety of pickup options - sss, hss, hh and mm90, the versions with single coils came with a pg I believe.

It was replaced by the Super Sport which, similar to the axis, is made with a maple cap over a basswood body and choice of maple or rosewood board. It comes with 2 HB's and a 5 way switch that splits coils in the 2/4 spots. There is also an MM90 version, which is an ash body under the maple cap and a 3-way.

then there's the rosewood version, piezo option, etc...

Axis Sports are the best man. I prefer them over an Axis, just my opinion though.

You gotta post some pictures man????

Great price by the way, was it beat?

pictures

Here's some pics from my roommates webcam. Not very close up, but I'll add some good pics to my profile sometime soon. I've included a front and back pic of an identical guitar I found elsewhere in the forums.

Can you tell from looking at these if I have Dimarzzio pickups or MM pickups? There not single coils....at least I know that much! Takes a 9v battery, sounds good!

Oh, and yes, there's a "ding" on the top side of the body.

I also included some pics of an identical guitar I found elsewhere in the forums.

These last two are not my pictures and I would never take credit for such wonderful photography!

Those are the MM90's, MusicMan's own version of a P-90. They are single coils and they are passive. You don't need the battery to operate the pickups.

The battery is for the MM silent circuit which is design to remove the 60 cycle hum you can get with single coil pups.

Nice Axe

doh! guess those are single coils after all. so maybe i'll keep the sub around after all. I've been stringing the sub with everly brothers alloy 52 strings, 11-48. Not that I don't enjoy the power slinkys, but these alloy 52 strings are great. Nobody sells them around here though.....

I haven't tried them, but I think you'll be surprised at what those MM-90's can do. They've got some serious bite to them.

Congrats on your new guitar.
I bought a Sport a year ago, and I'm loving it more and more. It's becoming my main guitar. The MM90's are great. More bite than a humbucker and more body than a regular single coil. They can do anything from country to hard rock.

Nice Sport!!! I seem to love my 2 Sports a little more the more I play them. I even prefer them to my Rosewood MM90 ASS (which I'll never sell) & my Silo HSS (which I just might sell). I enjoy the '99 a bit more than the '97, but I think that the '97 just needs a fret dress to make it just as good as the '99. The Sports are just so damn resonant and playable. By far the easiest guitars to setup, even with a tremolo. I'm sure that you'll love it with the MM90's. They rock!!! Enjoy.
