I´ve recently bought 2 used MM guitars. Silhouette w/ Rosewood fingerboard and Axis super sport (hardtail) both from august ´99.

Both guitars are great instruments and a dream to play, but I´m having a hard time making the pickups in the work for me. Finding it very difficult to balance between the neck and bridge pickup (and also the in-between pos).

I really like the humbuckers in the Axis, which are much better IMO.

So I´m looking for suggestions for replacement pickups in the Silhouette. I believe they could be DiMarzio Paf Pros, bridge measures 8.7k and neck 8.5 (vs. 16.1 and 14.6 in the Axis).

I have an Axis Supersport where the previous owner replaced the pickups with Seymour Duncan Jazz and JB pickups (SH3, SH4?). To me, they sound very close to the original Axis pickups. Perhaps a little more clarity. I have not measured the impedance.

Thanks guys.

I would post the serial numbers in our serial number thread and ask for the date of birth and pickups installed in each guitar.

FWIW, on any guitar with HSH pickup conifg, the in-between parallel positions are often a lot quieter than the humbucker only positions. That's just the laws of physics, baby!

I already posted the serial numbers:
DOB:09/22/99 , comes up as a Trans gold Axis, maple matching headstock
Trans red Silhouette: August 6th, 1999

(wasn´t aware that exact pickup configurations could be looked up)

But the problem with the Silhouette is not the in-between parallel positions, but the lack of balance between the neck and bridge pickups.

A lower output, brighter pickup will probably work better in the neck pos.

Don't forget you don't have same body's wood

basswood and maple top on axis
alder for the silhouette
it must be important :)
i've tried a long time Di marzio PAF 36th anniversary in one of my axis
they are so close a little more treeble

i've owned a silhouette with 2Paf pro they sounded very well with more clarity and treeble than an Axis
but i haven't noticed a so big outpout level difference ( there were a big difference with my Luke and silhouette)
much more gain for silhouette

:)

I´m fully aware of the different bodywoods - The Axis has much more of a LesPaul character than the Silhouette.

But my problem is not the sound of the Silhouette, but rather the difficulty in getting a balance between the neck and bridge pickups. When I have dialed in the bridge pickup, the neck is way too muddy/bassy and vice versa.

Another huge fan of the JB/Jazz here. I have them in my Sub1 and they sound great, you should try them in your Silhouette.

It's easy to tell what pickups you have in your Silo: If the pole pieces are black, they are PAF Pros. Have you tried playing around with the pickup heights?

Yes, they are definitely PAF Pro´s. Black polepieces and the output matches. I´ve tried lowering the neck pickup to get a balance between the two, but to no avail.
