Hello everyone,

Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey. I have a Sub1 Guitar which was bought as second-hand a few years ago. Unfortunately I bought it without trem arm since the previous owner lost it. Anyone knows the diameter of the trem arm? I would be glad if you tell the diameter instead of suggesting trem arms of other models, because I will probably have to buy a trem arm of another brand since the distributors in Turkey usually don't stock original spare parts.
Here is my second question;
Guthrie Govan signed my guitar a few years ago. I did not use anything to protect the signature because I was afraid the chemicals would ruin it. I see the signature is naturally disappearing as the time goes by and now I have to do something before it vanishes. I read that the Sub1 has a "custom" textured finish and the pen was a permanent marker (Actually a CD pen). Can you recommend me something to preserve the signature? Somerhing friendly with that "custom" finish and the ink. Whatever you recommend, I am planning to use it only on the signature, not the whole body. By the way, anyone know what that "custom" thing is?

I am planning to sand the neck to get rid of the black paint but I am not sure if it will look cool with the textured white body. Anyone did it before to a white body?

Thanks in advance!

A sanded sub 1 neck is a great upgrade. Use tru oil as music man does and finish with wax. My sub is done this way and it's a big improvement over the paint. Others here have done the same with great success. I have never heard anyone going back to paint.

I don't know the diameter of the trem arm on a SUB (I used to have one but mine was a hardtail), but there's a store here in the Netherlands who 'specializes' in Music Man parts. Music Man Parts

Shoot them an email: [email protected] . They'll understand english, carry a ton of Music Man instruments and could sell you the trem arm if it's the same as on a Luke, Silo etc.. Shipping wouldn't be that high for a trem arm.

+1

I recently bought a Sub1 and am in the proces of sanding the neck also. It's more to improve the playability and feel than for looks. Don't expect a birdseye maple neck to appear from under the finish. Mine had some dings in the neck finish, not only visible but you could also feel them. So sanding the neck was a no-brainer for me. Only the front of the headstock will remain black.

Thank you! I will check it out. What about signature protection? I see you have signed guitars. Did you use anything to protect the signature? Any info would be appreciated...

...

Thank you Jack FFR1846 and jzeijen for your suggestions. I think I will start to sand it as soon as possible.

Actually, they aren't protected. And yes, one signature on my Luke Blue Luke is rather faded. It's on the back below the neck plate. Really regret I didn't protect it...the other signatures are on the back of the headstock. As you don't touch it, it won't disappear. Great place for a signature :)

Haha I wish the back of the headstock wasn't black or I had a white marker :) Guthrie's signature is between the neck plate and tremolo spring cover. I hope I can find some useful suggestions here to protect it before it vanishes...

Today, one of the best luthiers in Istanbul applied spray acrylic varnish to the signature. The sharpness of the signare is affected a little bit but nothing to worry about. A friend of mine suggested to use brush with acrylic varnish (liquid type, I don't know if there is a special name for it), probably it would be better but the signature is good and safe anyways :)
By the way, the pickguard have a little broken piece and the luthier made a new, perfect pickguard made of maple. I think an unplanned mod started and I don't feel like I'm gooing to stop. I will want him to remove the neck paint and add a coil tap feature in the near future. He asked me what colour do I want for the maple pickguard. I have three options: Green, purple and brown. All of them look fantastic to me! I'm posting the link to the picture below. The guitar body is textured white as seen in the picture. Which one do you like the most?
