a little help choosing

well I recently sold my pink evh to get into some other toys. Mainly I wanted a macbook pro(already got) with an apogee duet and I wanted to buy my green tribute back from gc. Well now has come the time to buy a guitar and a really amazing amp just came along too. Something I have lusted after for a few years, A Cornford Hellcat combo(and I do have it on layaway at the moment) Now here is the dilemma, Im trying to be a little more responsible with my money these days. The cornford is 1800, the axis with 15% off and no tax this weekend will be 1624. PLus what I spent on the macbook and a new set of ray ban prescription sunglasses will far exceed what I got for the evh. I suppose I could augment it a little by selling my Hughes and kettner. Would you guys go for a cheaper guitar and go for an amazing hand wide amp thats pretty rare in these parts( and new sold for 3999) or just get the axis and keep the h&k. Im trying to do this right bc we want to buy a house in the next year or 2 so I have to stop blowing soooooo much money on toys for myself( very hard to do )

Yep, you'll never be satisfied if you skimp on the guitar. Damn, I can't believe I coulda grabbed that pink EVH. I'm kicking myself.

Guitars are made of wood pieces and NO two are alike. Amps - well, that's a different matter. If my choice is between a guitar I dig and an amp I dig - I always go with guitar. Another virtually identical amp will come along shortly. Guitar - not so much. YMMV.

Nope Jonny, with you... Get the amp! I've been a Cornford user for years and they really are the best.... A bad guitar through a good amp sounds better than the other way round!

I am with ya two Jonny! I have to disagree with you Norrin lol as I have plugged into quite a few of the same model amp and just like a guitar one is different from the other.

LTO I dont think you ever bonded with that pink EVH as you went through a lot in a rather short time with it and referenced selling it on a few occasions. I guess it just was not the one! I also tip my cap to you for moving a pretty rare and collectable ax to get something you would be happier playing.

Get something that your going to enjoy, Most of us have been playing for years....and alot of us have lost quite a bit of money on trades and selling. I just sold my Mesa Roadking, and the Mesa cabinet, It was starting to have problems with the switching after a close 8 years of gigging with it. I traded it in and got $2100, I bought a 5150 micro with the money for $1500, the amp is killer Nothing but compliments from all the sound man here in Calgary.

The reason why I am saying this is get something that's going to hold its value when you trade it in. I use to always have to pay extra for new gear, now I am a lot smarter and try and make a little or come ahead a bit. Just like that Blue Axis I bought, I made four hundred bucks on that also.

I always follow this rule, buy the most expensive guitar and amp you can afford, that way you have less regrets, and it will probably stick around for a bit.

While true, that is not the case here. The Duotone is a fine amp. I still stand by what I say - much easier to replicate a great amp than finding another guitar that just has "it".

well for the guitars Im not talking jumping down to a squire here guys. Its between the axis($1624) an axis ss bfr in emerald green(its a nos for 1200, but no trem) and a Peav Wolf standard deluxe mint for 1100. I know we are biased toward mm here so I wont ask what you think about the peav. So its not like Im looking to get a pos guitar.
And Straycat, it was tough to do but I was having a hard time wanting to bring it out of the case etc so it was time to let it go and it went to brett so its in good hands.

Why did I have a feeling that was it's new home lol. You did not see anything in Bretts stable that interested you as he has a lot of killer guitars.

Jackson you are right on point, I honestly cant remember taking a hit on any guitars I sold in the last 15 years. I am feel like a winner just breaking even and on those you make a few dollars on it's all gravy. Too many guys buy a new guitar and look to move it in less than a year, which is often the recipe for disaster.

I'm confused. So do you already own an axis but it's a hard tail? If you already own an axis then I'd definitely get the amp. If you're saying the amp would leave you without an axis then for sure get the axis. Sounds like the cornford is a considerable upgrade to your Hughes whereas a second axis isn't bringing a very significant differenc to your guitar tone and feel.

I have a Hurricane and owned a Hellcat head in the past when I was gigging, never failed to get comments on my tone, they really have a unique sound, very warm and rich but ballsy too. The Hurricane is a little tamer, slightly more vintagey sounding, the Hellcat was a channel switching, versatile, rock monster! I've owned some nice amps over the years, Marshall, Dr Z, Bogner Shiva, Mesa Dual Rec, Fender, Peavey JS but they've come and gone, but I've always had a Cornford (and EBMM) in the stable!

Unfortunately I have no way of recording that would do it justice, only a videocam mic and that won't deliver the true tones.

Congrats on the Hellcat, great amp, let us know how you find it when it arrives.
