Does anyone have any ideas about why the rosewood fingerboards on my SR4 and SR5 are very different colours?

The 4 is really quite dark but the 5's is almost Pau Ferro colour - kind of light.

Is it just a variance in the woods used?

Just interested. :)

Oh and this was after they were both cleaned......

There will be some variation. The Rosewood on one of my Rays is brown while on one of my J Basses it's actually a dark red/rose colour. It was black on an old P Bass I used to have.

Thanks Rod - was just interesting. My SR4 is a really dark chocolate colour....wondered if it would affect the tone. But as I like both basses' tones I am not really bothered....
