It was the Cherries Jubilee Festival here (this last weekend)...I had gigs coming out of my ears.... Thursday through Sunday.. (there's even more going on this week with the Monterey Jazz festival in town..)
On Saturday I had to play as a solo for a brunch in Pebble Beach (11 AM to 3 PM), then a happy hour at the Embassy Suites in Seaside with a Soul/funk band (5:30 to 7:30) and then as a duet at a private cocktail party in the Highland's area of Carmel at 9:00.
So for the solo & duet Jazz 'background' music gigs, I had brought my Godin Nylon String and for the Funk gig I had my Luke...
Anyhow (difficult to make a long story short), ... the pressure is truly on when one has to meet a downbeat deadline with back to back gigs. Not to mention using different set-ups & different guitars depending on the nature of the gig.
After the second gig, I hastily threw my gear into the van and drove over the hill and down the coast to the Highland's gig (past Monastery beach). Boy was I worn out and glad when that was over... Now I do quite a bit of double header's (back to back gigs) but rarely gig a triple hitter day (though they do happen..)
The next day, Sunday, I had a early evening smooth jazz duet gig at a local restaurant... One where I use either a hollow body or nylon string. During the middle of the gig, in walks the leader of the Soul band with my Luke in it's tiger-stripped gig bag...
Instantly, I realized I must of left the Luke at the Embassy Suites while I was rushing to pack up and drive to the Carmel gig and set up before the clients arrived...!!
Not only did I totally space-out and forget the Luke, but apparently security found it in the bushes in the back entrance near the loading dock. It's only by sheer luck they discovered it and called the band leader up the next day to come and get it.
OH MY GOD
, can you dig what a shock it was that I almost lost the Luke and probably may not have realized it until tomorrow-Tuesday (as every Monday night I play for an ethnic dance class down in Big Sur, using my Godin w/synth pickup to imitate sitar, ouds, flutes, etc...) So very, very thankful someone didn't walk off with it.
I guess Ed would say I had some kind of good Karma!!
