Thanks for reply. I´m going to buy that 2005 MM Axis from LarryAndrews. I´m curious about shipping costs and taxes when it arrives here in Finland. I´ll let you know then.
3 Years ago i bought Custom-made Ibanez Jem 7DBK from LGM-guitars, Alberta, Canada. In bank they told me, that wire takes one week when it arrives into Canada, but finally it was just 3-4 business days.
What makes EBay so special? Once someone told me that when you buy something from there, possibility of fraud is low? I dunno...
i buy all guitars in USA and payment by paypal is not cheap but the best way doing this.
got to Welcome - PayPal and creat an account. hopefully available for finland. you'll need a creditcard. then you need to verify it to make it possible to use for higher prices. but its all explained very well on theyr homepage.
shipping from USA to EU is best by UPS and cheapest by USPS. i always use USPS and never had a problem. in finland you must pay VAT and tax (3,6%) for importing it from USA. maybe your seller gives a smaller invoice (illegal) to you but when the parcel is insured you see the correct worth of your guitar so. you'll see.
have fun w/your new guitar and feel free to email me when you have questions in importing from USA to EU.
Robelinda mentioned wire transfers. I don't know how the laws work in other countries, but in the USA .. once you send that money via wire it is *gone* and virtually irreversible. So I'd reserve that payment method for only those transactions in which you have the highest confidence.
Other forms of electronic payment utilize ACH (Automated Clearing House), which takes about 2 days to 'post', therefore you have a much better chance of stopping a transaction. And the banking regulations are somehow different for this type of transfer versus a wire, so there may be additional benefits. (I can't remember all the rules, as I haven't had lunch with any of my ACH programming friends in a while.)
Paypal is the way to go-USPS is the best way(especially to Canada)-if you use UPS or Fedex to Canada the buyer can stiff YOU with the VAT-Which has happened to me twice now-I always use USPS to Europe-cheapest and best so far.
I have received payment (Western Union)a couple times from Italy/Spain -that seemed to work out fine as they have to pay the cost-where-as Paypal when you receive payment Paypal will stiff you with their fee's.
when i bought my blue EVH from a dude in Switzerland, i did a bank wire transfer, it was scary as all hell (sending almost $3000 to a complete stranger, 6000 miles away!)
it all worked out, he was an honest guy, but if i were to do it again, i would do pay pal!
USPS is a good way to ship guitars...i have shipped guitars to UK, Hong Kong, Norway, no problems!!!
As for safe shipping, I would think that 10% has to do with the company and 90% has to do with how it was packed. If you buy from a regular joe, then who knows....if you buy from the pros then they will probably do a decent job.
There's a forum/website somewhere where a Dan Erlewine (or something like that a fairly famous guitar book author/repair dude) that gives tips on how to pack a guitar for shipping.....all I can say is that none of guitars I've bought from shops or joes cames closed to being packed as it "should" be according to Dan.
I haven't bought anything overseas but are you sure Paypal covers everything?? You may want to read the fine print. I surprised no one mentioned escrow?
the good thing with buying EBMM axes from overseas is that the cases are freakin TANKS. most of the ones ive bought have just been put in a box, thats it. the cases hold up so well, if it was coming in a soft case then i would expect some packing skill.
