I have just bought a lovely SUB5 bass, active 2EQ.

The previous owner had installed a Seymour Duncan Basslines SMB-5D (ceramic) pickup. It sounds great, no doubt, but I wish it were a bit more like my Stingray, just with 5 strings.
Since the Stingray has alnico pickups, I'm guessing this is at least part of the equation I need to solve...

The previous owner of this SUB5 had kept the original (alnico) pickup and gave it to me. Also, as it turns out, I have a Seymour Duncan Baslines SMB-5A (alnico) in my drawer (something I bought a while ago for another rpoject and still hadn't been used).

I was just wondering whether anybody has played with SUB5 replacement pickups and what their experiences were.
I'll probably just try all three pickups and see which one I prefer, but I'd appreciate any comments from someone who has a SUB5 and maybe has tried other pickups.
Just looking for a more SR4 type of sound... with an extra string.

For a Stingray sound use the original pickup IMO.
I love the sound of the SMB-5d but it does sound a little different than a Stingray 4.

I would have to say the same thing, the original will sound the best.

i bought a sr5 pickup off a guy on here a while ago and it has made a difference to the sound, more defined and the low B is definatly cleaner. I would recommend the sr5 pickup, tempted to put the other pickup in the neck position but now sure how to do it

if the SR5 was an older one it would be ceramic, not alnico. Nice sound for sure, but not *the* Stingray sound.

Been ultra busy lately so I haven't got around to changing pickup/preamp. Hopefully this coming weekend. Will report back.

That's your answer right there ^

The original alnico pickup will do the trick ;)
