I've always wondered being a mechanical designer, most guitar manufacturers recess all of the plates on the back of their guitars EXCEPT the tremolo plate (in most cases), why??

This seems to make no sense to me and it looks terrible in my opinion. :D

Anybody have any idea's???

Perhaps its a clearance issue. There isn't a lot of room in the trem cavity between the back plate and the trem block, whereas in the control cavity there's a bunch of space.

Just a thought...

Just two thoughts here, and then I'm done for the day: ;)

1. The control cav's could be recessed and down like they are due to less amount of access required (meaning more adjustment of trem springs over changing out volume pots, etc.), so you want to keep them out of the way.

2. Since it's belt level, it's more prominent that that's what's hit first, rather than the finish, which could aid in lessening "belt rash" (or some theory on that behalf...I'm kinda reaching for that one. :p)

My take...
