Hi, i recently bought a JP but the shop owner sent it back for another one. on this one the action was to high and already buzzed all over the neck. (action at 12th fret was about 2 mm).

my question is, wat is an acceptable action height on a JP model without fret buzz? especially for the piezo sound i want little buzz. is there fret buzz at 1/16 inch?

I've had my JP 7 as low as 1/32 (and that's with a .56 low B) with some minute buzzing. I've raised it now though to 1/16. Keep in mind that if you leave the guitar out the neck may change ever so slightly, so you'll need to keep on top of the action. With precision like 1/32 or 1/16 you may have to tweak the truss rod here and there between sessions. Learn to do your own setups, and use both methods to adjust action, that being the truss rod and saddle height.

Any electric guitar with action that low will have acoustic buzzing. If you can't hear it through the amp, it isn't a problem IMO. Jp's guitars buzz acoustically.

A-frickin'-men.

Here's the bottom line. This is what I've always wanted to know. Jon's the last guy to set up my guitar to 1/32. It's probably at 1/16" now since it's been about 18 months since the setup, but I'm comfortable with the "higher" action now.

yep but remember that the piezo buzzes a lot more than playing through magnetic pickups. Best example: listen to "An evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess", he uses piezo and it buzzes quite a lot.

Listen to "An Evening With John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess". John uses his sig. model through a Mark IV head and 2x12 recto cab. When he switches to the Piezo, you can hear buzzing as well. But when he switches to the magnetic pups, it's gone.
