Active circuitry problem (maybe)????

I have a Stingray which is about seven years old. About a year ago a problem with, I’m assuming, the active circuitry appeared. When active, the bass would only make an electronic sounding pulse or tic. This is the only signal sent until the bass is rendered passive once again where upon normal (passive) sound and function will return.
Have you heard of this before?
What should I do?

Your bass has a switch to turn the preamp off?

No, not exactly, I guess I should have been more specific. When the battery is plugged in the back (active) the problem appears. When the battery is taken out there is normal passive sound.
