Hi all. I thought i'd do a spring clean of the old MM sabre 2 and decided to check on the wiring. Looking at an old diagram of the guitars electronics i see that a resistor was added from the Pre-Amp to the output jack. My Sabre 2 has no such resistor. The information on the diagram stated 'protection resistor revised later models'. It's a 1Kohm 1/4w (colours from end to middle= Brown, Black, Red.

As the guitar was re-furbished over 25 years ago i'm wondering if the resistor is meant to be there or not. There is no indication as to the year 'later models' are referred to, but i have seen that the Stingray guitars wiring diagrams show the same - meaning resistor added to later models.

I was wondering what the purpose of this protection resistor is? Also if this would have any effect at all on the tone of the guitar as it's attached to the output?

Regards

The resistor is there to protect the preamp from frying if the battery is accidentally shorted to the positive audio output terminal. It doesn't affect the tone because one leg of the resistor would have to be connected to ground to do anything.
