 So I've got a Bongo 4HH and Stingray 5HH and want to add another 4 string. I don't have a Sterling nor an HS configuration so I'm thinking logically it makes sense to add a Sterling 4 HS. So any thoughts on the SR vs Sterling vs HH vs HS. And is there a big enough difference in the SR HH vs HS sound to warrent adding that?

if your SR is alnico then the sterling with ceramic pickups might be a different sound

If it were me I'd consider the Big Al, something with a piezo and/or a fretless as something different to add to the arsenal.

shakinbacon is right on going with something different if you are looking for tonal variety. The Big-AL or a 25th would be the area to look into.

If you are looking for a more "mainstream" EBMM instrument then I would say that a Sterling 4HS has a tonal difference from the HH in Bongo or Stingray.

Good luck :)

I've owned the Stingray and Sterling HS models. I'd have to say that I honestly prefer the Stingray. Not that they both aren't phenomenal basses, but the bottom end on the Stingray sounds better to me. With that being said, one difference I prefer on the Sterling was it's single coil p/u vs. the Stingray's single coil. The Sterling single coil soloed had a little more of that clean traditional thump, while the Stingray's is a bit grittier.

+1 on the Sterling HS....The neck p/u can get that old-school thump.

What about the secret weapon? Bongo H (or Hp)
or...
Go fretless -
Sterling fretless Hp (probably my next MM).
I recently compared a fretless Sterling HS to Hp and really liked the Hp.
I also liked the Stingray Hp but the flexibility of the Sterling pup and the thin neck (even more helpful on a fretless) pushed me that way.
Now a fretless SLO SR Hp is another possibilty.
Decisions, decisions - a good problem to have!
Good luck with your choice.

What about a 30th Anniversary Stingray? The best Stingray ever made - BP said this himself. The used market hasn't realised this yet, as they are selling on eBay and at this forum for around what you'd pay for a "normal" Stingray. Grab one while they're still cheap!

Haven't looked much at the anniversary models. I need less choice, like do I want a P or a Jazz. BP, quit making this so hard.
