I took my guitar to a local tech (after reading Beej's instructions!) and he is going to install a push/pull pot for me. I tried to get this done before and the other tech I took it to wanted to replace the stock switch so I declined. The new tech thinks he can do it with the stock switch in place.

So, should I:

1.) Have the tech wire it up so the stock switching is the same when pushed (split in the middle position) and then when pulled have the added split neck and bridge positions as well as the stock split middle position?

OR...

2.) Have the tech wire it up so it is 3 humbucker positions when pushed (both HBs on in the middle position) when pushed and 3 split coil tone positions when pulled (ala the PRS McCarty switching)?

I'm torn between the two types of switching! Both are possible, but one retains the clever stock switching config and the other adds an additional tone option (both HBs on)...

Help me decide! He's going to start wiring it up tomorrow or Tuesday...

Yeah, Beej, thanks so much for the diagram! I am leaning more toward #2 like what you made the diagram for at the moment. I was just wondering if there was any good reason to not do it! I don't really switch between single and hum tones on the fly. It's usually a song that requires less hot pickups that I just stay on single or humbuckers, ya know?

Well my tech finished wiring the guitar late Saturday! I thought he would not be able to work on it until this week. I'm picking it up tomorrow though! I'm excited about the new tone options! He went ahead and wired it like #2 option above like I asked him to...

Congrats Adam! Let us know how it sounds when you get it back. I'm sure it'll be bada$$.

I just got back from messing with the 'new and improved' JP! It’s incredible to say the least. The cleans are phenomenal and the distortion is clearer and it sings so easily now. It’s perfect! I was concerned about the split coils being too bright but the pulled positions sound the same as the stock pushed positions but just not as hot (basically). I really like how it goes from ‘dark but not muddy’ in the neck position then to ‘just right’ in the middle position and then to ‘just bright enough’ in the neck position for both pushed and pulled! There is VERY little volume drop (in the clean channel) between pushed/pulled. I’m tickled to death with it… It made a great guitar even greater… I highly recommend it!
