Advice for sound FLEA stingray

Hi friends
I like sound flea stingray, any advice to improve my sound, I never probe a real Musicman Stingray

I have a bass OLP MM2:



pickup: seymour duncan SMB-4a (Almico)

preamp: handmade for me

I own an OLP mm22, and i have to say i agree. the olp sounds awesome, it has a great tone and looks sharp, but if you want the signature SR sound you really gota get a SR.

I agree but I must say that your sound is pretty close already and if you played it through a good amp, etc. you would probably be just fine until you could buy the real thing. Don't forget about the Ray34 either.

You've got the brightness. Just dial in some low end punch with your amp.

I've learned a LOT from listening to Flea. However, the point should be towards developing a way to express your own voice.

Just listened to your audio sample, and I agree with the above. I was thinking, gear wise, the right recording preamp with the right compression might help a bit, but I'd work with what you have already, because it will sound quite different in the context of the mix.

Actually, I'm pretty surprised how good tha OLP sample sounds.

But having tried to emulate the StingRay sound with other basses (some more expensive than a real SR) for the better part of 15 years, I came to the conclusion already expressed here "Only a StingRay sounds like a StingRay". If you want that sound you have to buy the real thing. It's not the pickup alone, it's not the preamp alone, it's the whole construction, the woods, the neck, and (according to BP most important) the bridge.

If you can't afford an original Musicman StingRay, then I'd try to find a used Musicman SUB. You can find them for rather low prices on Talkbass and eBay, and they have all the original ingredients and were built in the same factory as the original.

Regarding the Sterling by Musicman... you can get a used EBMM StingRay for less than a new Ray34.

Actually, what bothers me (and this is a pet peeve of mine) is that he didn't bother to tune his bass to the recording (or vice versa with computer software). A word of advice to all the youngsters: A LOT of recordings are purposefully sped up to "tighten" the sound up a bit. Therefore, you must tune your bass SHARP to match. That, or like I said, use some sort of software to flatten out the track itself. I use version 2.95 of Winamp paired with Pacemaker 1.32. Works great for playing along to mp3's. Make sure to google for those exact versions.

Regarding the Sterling by Musicman... you can get a used EBMM StingRay for less than a new Ray34.

True for some parts of the world (here in the U.S.A. you can get a black one for $649 free shipping), but wait until USED Ray34's start showing up. That will spread the gap real quick. Granted, the OP doesn't seem to be in the U.S.A. so that may not help.

Hey! Does anyone know wich body wood Flea mostly used for his stingrays? or for any of those early 90's black stingrays at all??? Ash, alder, basswood?? I've never really heard much about it. Thanks!!

I doubt you'll hear a difference in the woods, but it's what wood did flea use more of a what did ernieball use for the stingray, which I couldn't tell you because I don't know squat about the types..
