Hey guys,

I have been experiencing some fret buzz on my BFR for awhile now and have tried adjusting truss rod to sort this out.even though i absolutely love my BFRJP6 i was considering changing the string gauge from RPS9,s to 10,s maybe.the sound from strings seem very buzzy and they feel very elastic like.i know it might sound stupid but i think it might be down to the fact i was used to 10,s for alongtime with my LP.

also is it avery complicated process to change to 10,s and set it up myself as i dont really want to bring my guitar to a tech as i dont trust them with my guitar as there isnt many EBMM in my country in general.id be afraid they would cause damage.

Cheers for all replies:)

Doesn't sound stupid at all! Two years ago, I was playing in an "unplugged" coverband, and so I played my electro acoustic almost exclusively at that time. When I changed back to my electric guitar, it felt like it had rubber bands instead of strings on it
It was a Strat strung with 0.10s and everytime I did a bend, my hands flew off the neck, I almost couldn't play that thing, let alone the LP I had as well at that time....

It's absolutely no problem to change, I did this myself to my Luke a few times until I finally went for a set of 0.09 to 0.46s. You will have to increase the tension of the vibrato springs though, since the BFR JP6 sports a floating vibrato. Most likely you will also have to adjust the neck tension slightly, but that's basically it.

Everybody has his own way of playing, thank God! It could be that your attacking the strings harder than the person the guitar was made for ;-)

So, what works great for JP may not work as good for you, so I would encourage you to try and fiddle around with different string gauges and the setup of your guitar until you achieve the results you're aiming for.
Just remember two things:
1. little adjustments can make big differences, so take your time
2. except for the trussrod, you can't hardly damage anything. It's an EBMM, remember? :p

So go ahead and have fun setting up your BFR!
Hope that helps a little...

Yeah,

I don't "trust" any so called guitar techs out there either!!

Honestly, they are some of the most unskilled, incompetent, acknowledgeable charlton's out there (like numerous auto repair shops scattered about). They pose as "learned" but no nothing.

You need to be extremely careful with whom you choose to work on your guitar! In fact, try and find local "players" (jam nights etc. . .) and ask questions, you may be much better off. :)

It's not hard to change from one size string to another. It can be time consuming because any adjustment you make has an effect on another. If you feel that the 009s are to slinky, going to 010 could be the ticket. There are many steps to take in the process and as has been mentioned you could find a tech to do it or seek out a fellow player who can show you how. It's not hard but when you are a noob, it's easy to get stressed over it and mess something up. It's not like you can't undo it.

Guys - I've been thinking about this conversation (and the topic in general), and I'm wondering if he'd have to file the nut as well. Any thoughts?

I know JP has been going back and forth between 9s and 10s, and EB has been keeping up. Going from 10s to 9s wouldn't require any nut adjustments, but I'm wondering if the JPs that shipped with 9s have narrower slots....thoughts?

I suppose it's possible that this could happen. EB could probably tell you for sure if the nuts have been cut a bit narrower.

Good question!

I know that the bottom of the string (margin) stays the same height from the frets whether it's 9's or 10's, however the margin "between the strings" gets (micro) slightly smaller and also from the edge of the fretboard with 10's.

I think the nut slots are cut the same width (depth for sure) on both sizes.
