Let me start off my saying that I love music man guitars. I think the Luke III isnone of the best production rock guitars ever made. And the y2d is right up there. I can't get enough of these guitars!!!

As I was changing strings tonight, I noticed a small crack on the first fret between the a and d strings on the fretboard. My stomach sank as this is my baby!!!!

Is this common? Any way to stop this or fix this? I've been playing for over 25 years and have owned hundreds of guitars and this is the first time I've ever seen something like this. Anyone have any experience with this?

Here's a pic.

Is this something to call customer service about?

I love this guitar!!!

Mmmm, really don't know...I have some of those "lines" in my axes as well, but for me they're a sign of ageing and playing. Never have worried about those, since they're barely noticeable for me at least...

If you feel it's something that shouldn't happen, then it's better to call CS so they can guide you. I bet it's nothing serious.

Hi John,

Well, I can certainly see how that one escaped your gaze. It looks very similar to the textured lines everywhere else on the rosewood. I would monitor the line to see if it grows. If it stays like it is, I'd say you'll be fine.

Hey Mystix, I have a couple of those on a rosewood fretboard where a fret was pressed into its groove. The 'crack' is superficial and the fret is stable and secure.

I wonder if it's simply more visible on a rosewood board than maple. Or the interaction between to two types of wood.

I would discuss this with Cutomer Service.
From the pic it´s not 100% clear if it´s a deeper scratch or a real crack.
I´m sure they will help you in every possbl way. Where are you located? US?

I actually spoke to AJ today... I'm going to keep an eye on it for a bit to see if it gets any bigger.

If it gets worse, I'll take some CA glue to it...

The direction of the crack is not such that it will grow due to the stress on the neck. If it grows it would mean the wood is actually absorbing moisture and expanding in the direction of the frets. I would be surprised if this got longer as you wold need a load parallel to the direction of the frets to make it worse.

So I ended up taking the guitar to my tech. He charged me $15 for the repair. I think it looks pretty good

So did your tech, or AJ have any recommendations for preventive maintenance,ie, wonder wipes, or oil? I wonder if a crack like that develops due to dryness.....

Not really. AJ said that he actually thought it look like something might've chipped part of the fretboard off. He told me to monitor it to see if it would get any bigger but I could also fill it in

I also spoke to doug kauer of kauer guitars and he told me to fill it with ac glue mixed with rosewood dust and then condition the fretboard
